those of you that can just ride around and set locations and catch fox after fox should feel fortunate. i only trap for a few nights at a time, maybe 2-3 tops. so i need to be on them and right on top of them to clean them out. i prefer to see sign and most of my traps are set on sign. the population has been on a downward spiral in my core area. buzzy, kw is a few hours east of me and traps in big time farm country, i have been out that way in similar terrain once and caught right much fur in a short run so believe you me i know the difference, however it is a long ways to go. i have trapped far and wide and know where and how to find fox sign. my point is not everyone can just set blind locations for gray fox and expect to fill the truck with triple digits in short order.
now we are back to reality with those statistics. buzz, i trapped a few days with a friend recently and we passed on quite a few great looking locations because there was absolutley no sign and it would have been there if there was fox. could have set a trap and maybe got lucky and something passed through but when only trapping a few nights, i prefer to be on them. i really do not like checking dead sets on a hope and a prayer it will hit eventually. i want them clicking right off the jump.
buzz, like i said, i only leave traps 2 nights, 3 tops in most cases so I want to be real close to my target, whether it is gray fox, coon, beaver, etc. if i was longlining for an extended period of time, then i would set more hope and a prayer locations knowing the percentage game would produce some fur. and i have done that and it does work. just two different ways of trapping. i like sign, you don't. i dont really care how you do it.
p.s. the last guy i had down trapping already sent two more non-residents down right on top of me for the past two seasons, so what's two more?
