Buzz:
You haven't watched the DVD. PM me an address and I'll hook you up.
I ONLY set on sign . . . . but probably not the sign folks usually think about. I want to KNOW there are fox there before I set a trap. Grays are found in pockets, so even though one piece of timber looks like good fox habitat, the fox may have a different idea. Sometimes the pocket of timber just across the road has lots of fox, when another similar looking pocket doesn't have any fox. Sure, you can confirm there are fox in an area by finding sign (scat and tracks), but conditions and weather don't always allow that to happen.
I like to go in after season is over when we get just a skiff of snow and go look for tracks . . . or better yet, I go in with my trail cameras to see where the fox are, how many are in an area, what water source they are using, the trails or roads they use, and even what lure or bait they like, etc. Trail cameras have helped me catch more fox than tracks or droppings ever have.
There, I spoke my mind.

Buzz-
I have never caught a grey fox.
HOWEVER, i watched some guys who DID catch greys in Louisanna, and they caught greys while setting on sighn, and when they were setting traps, i LOOKED for sign, and found none, and they still caught greys.
FWIW

Fell for it hook line and sinker, didn't I?
Have you ever set cameras on mock sets? You know, lure, bait, hole, with a camera pointed at it and watched what showed up? I know, I know, I know, forty possums, 16 feral pigs, 27 coons and a few geese??

Wonder what Rodney would say? I'll bet he's got this thing all figured out.
You have soil out there; we just have rocks. Truthfully, we have so little soil that I'd go blind looking for enough dirt to hold a fox track. Or if there is soil, its sand in the bottom of a dry wash, and all you can see is a dimple -- that could have been made by a rabbit or a fox or a bobcat or a million other things that live in the desert.
But I do have the ability out here to get away from the dogs and the geese, and we have no coons or possums. Wish we had 40,000 deer in the entire state. And water is scarce here, so it concentrates everything, especially in the summer. When most trappers are home sipping lemonade in July, I'm setting cameras on springs and water developments to get an idea of what is in the area.
Or running around at night with a spotlight and a varmint call (can't have a gun in the truck). The eyes in the night tell me the fox are there.
Every area has its own unique set of problems and good trappers observe, learn, adapt, and overcome the problems. I have no doubt that I would be reduced to a blithering idiot if I trapped your country (except I'd just ride around with Rodney).

buzz, just about everyone will set a good looking location for a few days if the surroundings is not good for showing sign. however, a clear cut with mud/dirt roads or field edge that does not have tracks is a bad sign to me. does not mean "a" fox cannot be caught in the general area. i like to see abundant sign concentrated so i know i can catch a couple fox fast and move somewhere else. there are many factors that have caused me to approach grays this way and pre-season scouting for me would be a waste of time. it all boils down to timing and when i can start trapping and what happens before that.

if a trapper can catch a bunch of fox every place he puts a trap then he is overrun with fox. if not, then revert back to why its important to set on sign. another problem i have found is once i kill a bunch of grays on a farm, the population lacks in the future. i believe many fox trappers are in the rut of riding around and setting good looking locations which is all fine and dandy if you have a healthy fox population. try that in an area with a low population and heavy pressure and see what happens.

Not so Clown..........I have a live market trapper that cleans out alot of farms in september and october, good ground will catch the family dispersal two months down the road and be ready again........
I often go back to a farm that was real good two months after I leave the place only to find new fox have moved in.

Like setting on sign but our fox are so small they don't leave much for tracks, even in soft ground so usually just set up where they would be if they are there.
As for hurting them as Winston claims, i agree. Took 24 off a line one year then only had 5 the next year and never have caught many since then, even skipping years in between trapping it.
But distemper is the main cause of low grey fox population's I think and we've been getting our fair share of that mess for the last decade!

Isn't that an oxymoron?? A 400 acre mountain? Out here we call that a freeway overpass.
Jumped a lion off of this little guy right where the road makes that last right hand hairpin.

Si, eess a young burro!
We could see where the cat came down off the road embankment (there's actually dirt there from when they cut the road) and jumped this guy and his momma. His momma was still standing across the canyon snorting and blowing at us. My son saw the lion run up the opposing sidehill.
