Well, now our fox is skinned, and should look sort of like this (assuming it was nice and dry when you caught him, and you didn't blow holes in him and leak blood everywhere).

Keep the fur side in, and put the fox on your fleshing beam.

I split the tail first. Use a sharp knife, or one of those cute little razor blade thingys.

Split the tail all the way to the tip.

Apply a generous portion of Borax to the tail, all the way to the tip.

Now skin out the ears a bit, at least to get rid of most of the meat and grisle. Then rub with Borax.

Now apply a handful of Borax to the entire skin. Using your fleshing knife, push the fat and flesh off toward the base of the tail.

Turn the hide over and do the other side.

Our goal is a clean, white, non-greasy hide.

Do you use the sharp or dull side of the knife?

Uhhhhh, they have a "sharp" side???? Huh, I'll check that out.

Actually, I use the sharp side (it leaves cleaner edges on the holes I usually make!!)

Oh, one other thing I should have pointed out . . . there is usually a streak of meat or fat under or around the front shoulders. On my beam, I have found it easier to get this off if I put one leg at a time on the tip of the beam . . . kind of like ironing a shirt sleeve. Instead of just putting the nose on the tip of the beam to do all the fleshing, put each front leg on the beam and shave around the legs, then put the nose on the tip of the beam and do the rest.

Excellent post. What kind of fleshing knife is that? I have a cheapy $18.00 one I bought and then the MB cutting edge. I still end up using the cheapy most of the time because the other one seems too sharp and I put holes in the pelt.

Is using the borax a common thing? What does it do and will it be of any advantage for coon?
