I've had 7 cable restraints out for 2 nights now in an excellent coyote location; however, I've only had 1 thrown restraint for my efforts (there was a lot of wind and rain last night, which could explain that). There may not be anything wrong with them (the coyotes simply may have not moved through the area lately), I'm worried that I don't have them camoflauged well enough. How much do you guys camoflauge your restraints? Pictures would be appreciated. Thanks.

I boil mine in water and baking soda till they turn grey and dull.I then take the pot, put it in the sink and run water in the pot to let the machining oil to run off.Take them out of the pot and rinse them well to get the baking soda off...baking soda is a mild caustic acid.I hang them outside until I am ready to set them.

Cook them in Baking Soda/Water for 30 minutes. Hang 'em to dry.
Then dip them in a weakened-down solution of water and latex paint. 2 or 3-to-1 water-to-paint works OK. Try a mix and see what works with the paint you're using.
Slap them on a piece of cardboard to knock off the excess paint. Let them dry well.
If they're not covered with the paint as well as you'd like, do it again. I would rather put on a second coat and have an even covering than a globby or too heavy single covering.
Paint them with a light tan colored paint and they just about dissappear in the grass.... SOLID Dark colors stand out like a sore thumb!
Air Dry until you're ready to use them.

I like the Formula 1 it is fast and easy when you have a bunch of snares to do. I also like painting them with a LIGHT coat of camo paint. If you coil them together and spray each side with different colors of camo, when you un-coil them they blend in so well I can hardly find them. But the spray paint is too expensive when you have 1000 snares to do so I use the F1.
I mix the F1 like the can says (or thinner), uncoil my snares and dip them 1 dozen at a time and drop them on cardboard to dry for an hour or so. They are then done. Just one dip is all you want to keep from impeding the locks performance.
I used to do the baking soda thing but I never liked the chalky feel or the resulting look of the snares. And I have learned this... You don't ever want to boil all the oil off your snares. I know that's controversial, but this is a learning post so here's why... If you boil off all the oil it removes the oils from the center strands of the cable, without this oil, the first time the snares see any moisture or high humidity the cable begins to corrode/rust from the inside, out. This is often very gradual, and if your snares are used and connect the first year-two after you boil them it will not be so big a deal... HOWEVER after a couple years in Iowa's climate the cable becomes stiffer and weaker. I've had snares get so bad that if you'd bend a kink in the cable by hand, the strands actually break (not all them but some). So I say if you have a few to do, use camo spray paint and if you have a bunch to do use the F1.
Furthermore- I venture to guess the baking soda guys have never tried the F1 or they would switch if for no other reason than the speed and way better camo look. I use the brown F1.
Here there are all done...

Then time for the Formula 1, before....

After...

All done....

Closer up....

I really like that F1 for fast snare prep! Enjoy!

Jayme, do you ever have problems with the smell of spray paint avoidance? I'm getting a few snares quickly, and have some camo spray paint, but want to get them out ASAP. How long do they need to be air-dried?

If I paint them I let them air out for a good two weeks. The F1 can be used and set them in hours.

we don't treat our CR's in any way, heck, we set many the same day we make em. up to 26 coyotes so far, this warmer weather we had, we pulled em but resetting some today and tomm. hope to have about 100 CR's going by the weekend.
have had 3 doubles, we live in southwest missouri by joplin, if you are still having problems, feel free to pm me and maybe can come down for a morning and see if we can help you get on your way.

The kids and I use Formula 1 brown until the snow. Then we use snares spray painted white.
TexA- I might have to try the diluted latex paint on some.
Good luck-

Wow, those are some interesting ideas. I've always just boiled them in baking soda, which seems to give them a fairly nice dull gray color.
Actually, I was refering to camoflauging the CRs after they're set. I've been putting them in trails where the coyotes go under the fences (don't worry-I'm doing it legally), but I'm afraid the restraints "stick out" too much. Does anyone have any pictures of cable restraints set in a trail that're properly camoflauged? Thanks for the new dying/coloring ideas!

A case study was run in Cananda and the white colored restrains did poorly, They said the white stuck out to much, even in a snow environment

These were both set after the tracks were made. I don't try to camo them into trail much at all. I think the critters percieve them as just a weed and push on through most of the time.

I make my own snares. I put them in water and baking soda then straight out to the bush to be set. I don't where gloves but I try not to handle the snares excessively. I have few fox in my area, but pick up coyote and wolf. Don't seem to need to camo them at all.
The key is patience!

ADC,
Are you a trapping wraith or do you have a crane or other suspension device or “Stretch Armstrong” abilities? You put the snares in after the critters’ tracks but I don’t see any disturbance in the snow from you. How in the heck do you do that? I'd have my tracks all over the place.
S/F,
Bob

Bob,
LOL. I just sneak in from the side of the trail trying to walk on the grass that is showing through the snow then with my snare on the support with a good support collar I can just reach it out where I want it and tap in the stake til its the right height. I anchor these with a second stake back in my tracks.

ADC's right about using F1, I switched to treating my snares with F1 this year and I absolutely love it. I wish I would have started using it years ago. It's much easier than boiling and I think it speeds up the snares a little. It's not expensive either, it cost me about $10 to treat 1000 snares and I dipped them all twice.
