Has anyone used chin lifters under your snares for bobcats on trails ??? If so , how close to the bottom of the snares and how far from the snare would you set the lifter . I'v missed a couple of cats that have ducked the snare that is set 8 ins. from the bottom of the snare to the walking surface . I'm sure a chin lifter would be the answer .

A Bobcat will hunt with his eye's. His head will be high as he scans with his eye's looking for prey.

A K-9 tends to keep his nose right wear he is going to set his foot down.

So in my mind the Cat has his head up and there is no need for the chin lifter. Any other opinions ?

they could be stepping right through the loops. find tight spots then tighten them more if necessary then hang a tight loop, say between rabbit and fox size loop. use chin lifts too.

if you are going to targe only bobcats on trails then you need to narrow things way down from what you would a coyote.. block, block, block.......when you are finished with your setup kneel down and look at it from the cat's perspective....if there is only one 8" hole through the trail and it is the center of your loop, you are in business....
cats will duck and dodge the wire if you give them the option... you'll get hip caught cats a lot as they'll slink through even an 8" hole.....neck or hip doesn't matter to me, i am trying to catch them......

The only thing I could suggest is to possibly speed up that snare (more of a teardrop) so the cat, if walking slowly as they most times will, doesn't have the option of backing out if he meets resistance or realizes his mistake.

Would you thik hiding the lock with a stick on an angle would help . I don't know how many we missed last year jumping through the coyote snares and ducking cat snares .Now they are starting the same thing this year . Haven;t had any go through the coyote snares yet though.Just 2 ducked the cat snares . Their going to drive me to drink..... LOL

1. Practice setting your snares in such a way that they close with very little pressure, but not so easily that the wind blows them closed. Practice makes purrfect.

2. I think chin-lifters are a must for cats, and the closer you put them to the bottom of the loop the better off you are, so long as the snare doesn't hang up on them. I've even seen a small weed hung from the bottom of the loop, as a chin-lifter, in River'n w/ Clint and Newt. It's a good video to have. Clint Locklear also sells High Performance Snaring Vols. #1 & 2. I haven't seen them yet but plan to get them from MTP.

3. Get one or both of Steve Woods' videos. He covers cat snaring and trapping fairly completely, makes it look simple, and will answer any questions you have. They are a wise investment.

i like my lock setting on top of the loop, like gage said.....you want it to fire when it gets even the smallest bump.....
there is plenty of room for a cat to slide under that snare......i don't know about "chin lifters" but i'd put something on the ground right under the snare to make him keep his head up

I make loop bottom about 6 inches off ground. I use a cane fork over snare to make him duck.

Thank you Gage Drift for the nice words \:\)
About the only time I don't use a chin lifter is when cats are ducking under something. If they are ducking under something, then the snare itself becomes the larger opening for the cats to go through so it's not lilely they will try and duck under the snare.

kybeaverman seems to make his sets that way, and it's a great idea! For me, I often don't have much raw material to work with so I try to skip putting something over each snare just as a matter of saving time.

Thanks for the info guys, you have been very helpful . I installed chin lifters on all my snare sets yesterday and had to close a few openings a little as well . There was a cat yesterday ducked 2 snares on the same trail . That's the second time he ducked those snares . NOW , the openings are a little tighter and the chinlifters are installed . Time will tell if that's the answer .

The chin lifters definately were the answer. Here is a pic of a big cat that ducked the snare twice .He didn't duck the chin lifter . Or did the one yesterday . The one hanging and the weasel are from today and the one on the board is from yesterday ...

You got that right . last season those friggen cats were ducking cat snares and jumpping through coyote snares . I believe I found the plan . Better not open my mouth too soon ,I may put my foot in it.... LMAO . WE still have Jan and Feb left to trap cats . We're aloud 5 per licences . My son and I can get 10 .If we get the ones from last year that was getting by the snares ,we may have the 10 .We caught 6 last year and should of had the 10 . I think we are on to them now .

I use a twig about 1/2 the size of a pencil. This time of year when the ground is frozen I make a hole with a spike to stick the chin lifter in and no more than 2 inches below the bottom of the loop .

we have a lot of broom grass here in kansas....it makes excellent blocking on either side of the snare......you can really funnel those cats down......

i am going to experiment with your chin lifter idea.....thanks for the info.

always love to read posts on good ole' t'man to get more tricks!
