I'm considering making a smear bait thats more pasty then anything. Something i can keep jarred up without going bad. Something i can smear along bridge walls that won't freeze. Also something i can use with QTIPS to bait dirtholes/cubbys/LilGrizzs with.
Figured i'd do this...
Melt Vaseline in the microwave.... Mix in FISH OIL and Spike it with Shrimp oil and or Crawfish oil....
Once it sets up it should work... Thoughts??
I'll still be putting down some liquid fish oil when setting...

You grind it right, it will be sticky enough without all that mess. I grind several hundred gallons a year.

I wonder if crisco wouldn't be a better base then vaseline. Guessing a food product is going to be more appealing then a petroleum byproduct.

i've had vaseline/castor mixture that caught a 62.5lb beaver last year....
and i'd say if vaseline is gonna run them off everyone would be smearing it on their garbage cans...
i really don't think they care too much about foreign smells as long as there is a fish smell around...

Sounds like a trap line experiment to try. Make one batch up with vaseline and another with cooking grease. Put two traps a few feet apart with one smell at one and the other at the second and see which one catches more coon.

Ive tried the marshmellow paste and it does work well but... i think its to much of a mess to use. If you get any in the threads and it gets cold, it makes it a pain to open especialy if you hands are cold. Also if you drip any on any of your equipment seems like everything is sticky because it then gets on you hands and gloves then ends up on all your equipment. You get my point. If i were you i would buy some of red o hearns bait. Its sticky and freeze proof and works good. Just my opinion.

simple fix for a smear lure order a gal of medhaden oil from boaters world cost $15.00 a gal just stick in freezer over night or leave out side if freezing weather ..it will not freeze solid but will turn in to a thick gel and it has a super sweet smell and if it warms up it still leaves a oil trail on the water and on the wall....and to make it smell strounger just add a oz of liquid smoke ..(shake well before using if warm)also good for red and grey fox

Vaseline probably will take some of the smell away once it dries. I made some bait with it once and when It was liquid it smelled real good but once it hardened back up it barely had a smell anymore. I was disapointed with it. Dan

daruoho....
I've never used Catfish Bait, but I have used LIMBURGER CHEESE. Caught Coon and Mink with it in water sets along the river.
I also have used SMOKED FISH, Smoked Herring to be exact and it worked. The critters will/did really dig for that stuff, even down into the snow. The smell of this fish lasts even when it's frozen solid.
CedarRiverTrapper.... I buy ground fish, similar to what you made, from Kabeles Trading Post in Spirit Lake. Comes in about 8 pound bucket/jugs now. It's pretty cheap too, already ground etc all. I mix in a large sized bottle of CHEAP Pancake or Waffle Syrup. It holds up very well and it WORKS! Been using it for many years now.

Cedar, If the ground fish is freeze proof from adding glycerine, how do you store it so it doesn't rot all summer. I've never used glycerine so this is new to me.
