Good post. As soon as nighttime temps drop below freezing I switch to straight peat and use it the rest of the season. Sometimes I even use it in early season if its real wet out because mud is really hard to sift LOL.
Only things I do different than you is I sift the peat going over the trap (unsifted under) and I don't use a pan cover with peat.
I've had sets that were under water from flooding and when I yanked the trap, dry peat came floating up!
Never used any dirt or anything on top and don't have too much trouble with it blowing away.
And like you said, when the top layer does finally get wet and freeze, its easy to just flip that frozen "plate" off and sift a bit more peat on.
