Denny Emery Denny Emery trapper Registered: 12/09/07 Posts: 512 Loc: Reynoldsville, Pa 45	This will be my first post on Trapperman. Let me introduce myself. I live in Jefferson County, Pa. and make my living as a toolmaker for the past 25 yrs. It has been a while since I have been trapping and started back into it this year with both feet focusing primarily on fox and coyote. I am in my mid 40's and willing to listen and learn from the pro's as I do not know it all. My question is this: I am not familiar with a step down trench set. What exactly is it? How is it made? Advantages? and does anyone have any pictures? Thanks in advance. Denny Emery

SNIPERBBB SNIPERBBB trapper Registered: 12/26/06 Posts: 1289 Loc: Rodney,Ohio	Step-down set is basically a dirthole set that has the whole set lowered below ground level. I dig/chop the set area down 2-4 inches, I have heard of some guys going deeper but I like mine a little shallower so they dont turn into drinking bowls for coyotes when it rains. Once you dig the set area down, make everything like you would a dirthole. The advantage to this set is that the first step down in into the "trench" is usually the animals last free step. Another advantage is because of that last sentence, your trap stabilization can be a bit off. Edited by SNIPERBBB (12/17/07 07:52 PM) _________________________

Only open area is about a 2 in trench leading to your attractor, You underecut the sod til it is very thin, slip your trap inand cover , leaving a small visible trench about 2 inches by 8 or so inches. When the animal steps down in , there is little to no chance at missees with this set. Carmen familiarized this set in the 90s and it is a great fur taker as a changeup set. Now there are several stepdown trench set variations like Del Kramers and Craig Ogormans , but they are on a different scale and design all together. The sets shown in this posts pics are just tapered stepdowns more so than trench step downs. Bruno Make a regular dirthole, minus the trap, and bait it with a Snausage. Get yourself a dog and show him the dirthole. Let the dog dig out the Snausage and notice the mess left at the dirthole set. Construct a similar set in the field, add the trap, and bait with lure or your choice (a Snausage may actually work). As you can see, I like the hole to be almost parallel with the surface of the ground to make the canine have to step into the trench to look down into the hole. I used backing when I made mine, but it was just a stick or something to shoot some urine on. Then put bait in the hole. I don't make this set anymore because I can't get it to produce. If anyone wants me to draw more pics of my sets that don't produce...I got loads of them. Kidding. I got away from this set because the plain ole simple to construct dirthole set was catching more yotes than this one that takes longer to make. _________________________ http://tcpc-handgrabbing.com
