Look how much open area you have around your trap, guide him so all he can step on is the pan

also i think i would remove the sticks infront of the trap and move them to the back, i remember somone called them stopper sticks not guide sticks.
or you could also put another trap, between the stick on the far bottom and the stick before the trap

Perhaps it is the picture, but it looks to me your hole is straight up and down. If so, an animal can approach the hole from any direction and look down and will not necessarily go over your trap.
Try digging your hole at a 45 degree angle. This will help guide your target animal to your trap in front of the hole.

If it is to sandy to hold a coyote set the ancor another way, always stake for the biggest animal. I dont think the exposed pan will work, never experimented with it, good luck looks good,.

are these for bobcats? if so then the blockings ok if not too much for coyotes and for the last one leave the trap bare and cover pan with moss to look like a moss cover rock and block more around the trap to make the covered pan more inviting.

Only things i see i would do different is to try digging a smaller bed, you will find it a lot easier to bed the trap if the the bed is just a little big bigger than the trap. And with that sandy soild i would deffinately use a pan cover or some underall of some type. Other wise, i dont see much that i would do different.

I've never trapped a bobcat before. I didn't know you could leave the trap exposed and still catch them. I thaught the traps had to be covered like a coyote or fox set. Learn something new everyday. Are your traps just waxed? Dan

i would like to start off by pointing out that he did cover the first trap as it shows in the third picture of the finished set. i cant talk for cats but coyotes i would recomend a backing of some sort. try something natural that stands out like say a chunk of wood or a white rock. this will force the animal to work the set from the trap side. it will also add a point of intrest to help draw the animal over if the wind is in the wrong direction. You probably wont be able to do much about catching coons thats part of the deal but if your getting rabbits you could try adding a little more pan tention. again i cant talk for cats but for coyotes i would get rid of the big sticks and go with more subtile ways of guiding. for example maybe one thick blade of grass in the front to step over then place the pan in make the area over your pan slightly lower then every where else. there are lots of differect variations of the dirt hole and everyone does it differently so its really about finding what works for you.

First off for cats you need to FORCE him step on your pan by either guiding or a step down. Cats will take one step look in the hole and be off they don't work sets like coyotes or fox. You have to give them one place to step and that's on your pan.
For coyotes do away with the sticks and use a step down. I've caught coyotes in cat sets with heavy guiding but that is not the norm. You should also learn how to make a flatset.
If you are worried about the anchors use drags.
Go to the archives and read up, there is a lot of good info in there.

To me a cat wants to step any where but the pan so like offshore said you need to force them to step on the pan. To me the exposed pan in the pic encourages the cat to step either just to the left or right of the pan whereas if you leave the trap exposed and block off outside the trap the cat can only try to step between the jaws and the pan(which they're paws are too big) or on that nice flat pan. I wish I could do the same with my coyotes set but can't, nothing erks me more than to check a coyote set and see a big cat track just to the side of the pan. Gary not to start a whizzing match, I explained my reasoning for setting the trap exposed could you explain to me the advance of just exposing the pan; to me as I said it would encourage the cat to side step it and if a coyote came along it would encourage him to dig and if he sets off the trap turn him into a digger and bug all your sets that he comes across.

nboost...ill help a fellow okie...
i like everything about your sets........except...
PERSONALLY, i dont like placing sticks around my traps. what happens if an animal bumps one while working the set, and it gets between the jaws? when the trap fires, all you have is a stick...POTENTAILLY...on a cat, i dont like taking those odds.
so, IMO, what works for me, is to make the set into a WALKTHROUGH, not to heavily guided for a coyote, but will easily take the cats.
to make walkthrough, make a regular dirthole, like you did, then use whats called an OUTSIDE blocking, next to the loose jaw. a small claude, a clump of grass, anything SMALLER than your backing, to create a "Y" shape.
heres a couple pics.

notice the outside blocking?
also, for cats , get some more eye appela there, spread some feathers around the set, in the hole, etc,
your sets WILL catch coyotes and cats, but you asked to critique!
good luck!
