Seems like alot of cat trappers on here like to leave the trap exposed. I was just wondering why leave the trap exposed and why it works better? I have always covered my taps completely for k9s and cats. Is it just what works best for the individual or is there an explination for why yall do it??

Bobcats are not weary like a k9, so they arnt alarmed by things as easy. I leave my sets exposed because it is easier, quicker, and you dont have to worry about the ground freezing on top of them. With properly placed stepping guides the cat is going to step on the trap whether it is burried or not because that is the only option you give him if he is going to continue on his travel route. 1 place to step and it is on the pan.

9Coyote and fox have very good smelling and rely on it to live, bobcat dosent have very good smelling but man they have some eye sight. If they see feathers everywhere and dirt all over the place they are gonna check it out. I like a very noticible set for both myself because if dirt is piled up and everywhere a fox is gonna want to check it out any way. Hope that helps.

ok well that does help...I know cats use more sight than smell unlike yotes and fox....i was just wondering what the advatage was to setting exposed...soo i guess it is easier and faster and if you are targeting only cats then you wont get a fox or yote in the set..thanks

The exposed set is mainly to help from having froze down sets in places that have snow and cold weather, plus it keeps the coyotes and other things out of the trap leaving it for cats only. If you had it covered with dirt and it got wet and froze your trap is not working, with the exposed set there is no dirt to freeze over the trap, allowing it to go off when needed.

Hope this explains it better.

Been reading about these exposed sets and decided to give one a try. Do those that use this method put anything down for anti freeze under the trap?

beav,
i use dry cedar needles.....
find a big cedar tree and scrape down through the wet needles right at the base of the trunk.....you'll find dry ones under the wet ones........scoop up a sifter full and put about an inch in your trap bed........snuggle the trap down in them and you won't have much problem with freeze/thaw

I use rock salt around the springs and levers. If the weather gets real bad in your area then longspring traps are less likely to freeze down and will work in harsher conditions.

Exposed traps are better.

Much better.

Not cause the trap is exposed as much as because it is used at a walk through set.

Its the set that make the difference and the exposed trap makes the set better, but you can cover the trap with dirt if you are a non-believer.

The walk through will catch more cats cause you place it in their path and cats are too lazy to go around it. Or jump over. Takes advantage of what makes a cat a cat.

A percentage of cats, maybe 30 - 40 per cent, won't walk out of their way to check out your dirt hole set. They just don't give a darn. And walk on by. Or sit 6 feet away, and then walk on by. But that 30 - 40% will walk right through the walk through.

The exposed trap in a walk through targets the foot. You leave the pan or pan cover as the only spot to step on, and by golly the cats steps right there.

Cuts way down on the misses or toe catches compared to covering the trap with dirt.

Last by not least it doesn't freeze up if you don't put anything on the trap to freeze. And you put salt or sticks under the trap.

But even in non freezing climates its a better set, for the above reasons.

How does it affect things when it snows on your exposed traps? How imperative is it to have your traps dyed and waxed when you are leaving them exposed? I can see where this would save me a lot of time...
