This is a set of pictures that show the fox caught and the remake of the same set. Notice the eye appeal of the remade set. The scent laid down by the caught animal will be all the lure needed at this location a little beaver meat in the whole and your back in action. These are hot spots after the first catch this was the 2 fox and 1 cat at this one set. Always reset these situations as they are high producing sets. The remake is shown at 3 differnt angles.

Along time ago big flashy holes were the norm. But now days it seems the trappers use smaller holes. If you have ever seen a ground hog Hole there isnt a canine that can pass up a look down that hole. Try some bigger holes and see what happens. But its not a speed set. But they will produce quite well on location.
I always try to mix my holes up.......some small, some big. Seems this year I've done much better w/ bigger holes. Maybe not quite as big as the ones in the pics, but big enough to stick a baseball down.
I just like the eye appeal of the bigger holes and fresh dirt mounded up. If they pass by and don't smell your set they will definately see it and come to investigate.

Yes it is. Shooter knows the trap personally. The trap is set to the right of the hole the springs are at the 9 and 4 position the dog is at the 7 oclock position. The i use a screen wire pan cover. And in these conditions i will bed the trap in straw shavings and cover with dry dirt. The trap is a very old Victoe 3N and it has the kinkless chain and big barrel swivels. They are old but as you can see still very much user traps. The longer chains help keep the cats and fox from jerking free on the first jerk. If the trap goes with them it will hold him. Some times shorter chains on coil spring traps will miss them when they give the first quick jerk.

Lay down a layer of straw shavingsthen add some dry dirt about 1/2 inch worth then bed the trap in this then add more dirt dry dirt packing as you layer it in the set. Once you have it solid and the dirt is even with the top of the jaws of trap add the screen wire over the inside diameter of jawas and over the trap pan then sift dry dirt about 1/2 inch over entire set. Now you have a freeze proof set. Unless its freezing rain but then you just bust the crust off the top redo top layer of dirt and your back in business.
I wish I could be checkin that remake in the next couple of days looks good I am interested why the whole is facin toward the brush or corner of the fence looks good nice set

The reason the hole is facing the fence is that when the animals are walking the trail along side it they can see a part of the hole opening. Just another tug to pull them in. The hole is about 14 inches deep and at the bottom it angles back. Forcing them to try and get the bait out. Further making them work the set harder. And the old trap will do the rest.
