Would like to hear what the snarers think about setting snares in snow and walking the trails. Does this make canines shy away? Are you better off coming to the trail from the side and setting? I have heard both sides, that coyotes/fox will shy away from footprints and some have said they won't. Just curious about this.

(Edit: Our yotes around here seem to be pretty DUMB from the little I have observed them.)

I have actually had critters start using the trails I have broke in the snow as there trail. I think when there is alot of snow the animals just take what is the easiest path for them.

Some animals will follow your trails but most canines, in my experience, won't. I have always made it a practice to approach any canine trail from the side when placing a snare. I am careful to not step in their trail. Works for me

I think it varies from animal to animal. Some will follow a foot trail or a snowshoe trail readily. Some will veer off when they see it.

Sometimes they are more cautious around a bait station than where there is no bait. Sometimes all it takes is an inch or two of snow in your trail and they will start to follow it.

It varies in the season as well. Later in the winter they seem to be less cautious and will follow a trail more readily, even around bait stations.

I use the 4 wheeler and set off the back of it. Whether I am creating a trail or following a previous trail. Limits my footprints and more attention from others.

Seems to work for me but that is just my opinion.

If you have an ATV or snowmobile, drive that through the snow and set the track. I've yet to see an animal in MN that wouldn't follow my snowmobile track. Drive up tight to a tree, hang your snare from it and put any blocking in the trail so he'll veer to the snare side and you're good to go. Fox are very susceptible to this practice.

I shuffle my feet along so it isn't individual foot prints but rather a sort of trail......ner the snares, I mean.

You will find it is different in my area than yours. Here the yotes will not walk in my trail. Not boot or web trail. They will jump the trail or turn and run away. So I come in from the side. You will have to try different ways and see what will work in your area. LM.

just lie EduMan, i make the trails on a four wheeler out in crp fields and right between any sagebrush that narrows the trail. then just set a snare in each track of the four wheeler right off the back of the bike. works every time. in fact we need some snow in idaho, just to improve the snare catch...

I've found that it doesn't matter on coyotes and bobcats in my area , As long as I don't just walk up to the snare and turn around and leave . When that happened in the past so did the coyote . Instead I just step over it and keep on going and have caught many a critter that way . Another thing is to check snares before a snow/rain storm if possible , then what even oders that maybe left are there for the most part long gone .

I always TRY to approach the site from the side, keep my footprints out-of-sight, if possible.

Even when doing that, some Coyotes will refuse to go through the snare.

This week-end is the opening of our second shotgun Deer season, so I won't be doing much out there... Some of them guys/gals get tooooo crazy when they're after Deer!

Last week-end was the first shotgun season and I only heard of 4 people getting shot.... No one killed, so that was GOOD! HOPEFULLY they will be a little more careful this week......
