the sets appeal is an object of some sort that stands out in nature such as a bunch grass, rock, bone, piece of wood that is at the set or one you place there. You set a trap or 2 downwind side of the scent post 6-12 inches and give it a few drops to a teaspoon full of Urine. There are also lures advertised to be used at scent post sets. If you ever watch a dog find a object to pee on there's your scent post without the trap and lure. Its as simple as it gets in my opinion. You need to bed the trap solidy and use some small guide objects around the trap pattern to guide the animals foot over the pan. Allways use good clean traps and set with clean gloves.

Do you use any call sent or just urine?

scent posts are natural objects (found in nature already, or can be placed by you) that canines urinate on to serve as markers. they vary from fence posts, to corn stalks. a recent article in Fur Fish Game the author used a 30 inch long 2x4 with a hole drilled in each of the narrow sides close to the top to hold urine. i beleive urine would be more natural, but a call lure wouldnt hurt i guess. i am going to try these in a week or two, rather than dirtholes. i have had a hard time with dirtholes, because they arent found by canines on a regular basis. from the start, a yote is on high alert when he works a dirthole. i myself have seen several different scent posts that have been used by yotes, so i think they are much more natural and therefore i will try them over dirtholes.

I use scent posts all the time. But the last thing I want is a coyote! They be worth about $4 here right now. I wouldn't carry a 40 or 50 pounder and then skin his flea ladden carcass for 4 bucks. So I try to use sets that ignore them. I take a piece of old carpet cut to about 6 inches by 18 inches and staple it to a tree, the top of it about 2 foot high. I make a syrup tea of catnip and spray it good. Then I wipe some beaver castor on it in 2 or 3 places with a stick. It don't matter how much human scent is on it, a bobcat won't care! He ain't afraid of nothing that walks, talks, or crawls. I then set before and aft trail sets. Unfortunately a lot of yotes will get in your traps anyway \:\( Of course you set in bobcat country, the rough overgrown places, as cats use fields and open woods very little. Oh yeah, top off the set with a spray or two of cat urine. Then you might try a little "Here, kitty kitty."

Problem is that Coyotes might circle around the area for a few days and avoid such sets but eventually they decide everything is OK anyway and bingo. Believe it or not, coyotes like catnip big time and may hang in close for a while to work their way up to an otherwise unnatural set with excessive human scent around it. Ace
