Also notice i stretched the chain out far enough so once the animal is caught he can't wrap around the tree! If staked right under trap like normal a animal could of wrapped up around the tree several times, more stress on the animal plus the risk of a pull out.
Just thought id toss that in for the newcomers to this game.

Not anything new, lol. Got the big hole deal from Slim long time ago, Gerry Blair in the old Trapper magazine I think is where I picked up the walk thru deal from and cat tracks on sides is where i got the put a stick there and there from, lol.
But as shown, that set is terrible if it's doing alot of raining!

Looks a lot my my "Old Indian" set, I always use a hole 3" to 4" in diameter against a small hump for a backing for better set visibility and eye appeal from a distance. I also note that from the picture it appears that the trap bed is depressed a half inch or so below ground level like the Old Indian style set which is GOOD guiding in itself. Sets like that will produce results even when the prevailing wind is blowing the lure in the opposite direction, set will many times be visited because of the visibility and eye appeal. Slim once told me that he learned to trap when he was a young fellow from the writings of my Dad and John Ehn. Perhaps this is where Slim learned the set! The only difference between that set and most of mine is the guide sticks. I like to plant natural looking dead weathered pencil diameter sticks about 18" in heigth and plant them vertically and firmly up tight against each jaw and slant them outward from the trap bed at a 45 degree angle. This works perfect for cats and works most of the time for coyotes if one makes the sticks appear natural as though they had grown or fallen there. Once in a while a coyote might avoid stepping in between the sticks but the usage of them sure cuts down on near misses to more than compensate for an avoidance once in a blue moon. Thanks for the picture J! Ace

Did that one year asa on grey fox and whacked the fire out of them. No idea why I didn't do it again, lol. Think cause I moved more toward targeting coyotes than fox and did see some avoidance from them with such a set, which isn't all bad these days.

Those verticle sticks along with the modest step-down is deadly on bobcats and grey fox. As I said, I use it on coyote too and have learned from experience what I can get away with without avoidance. If I plant the guide sticks and they don't look just right and natural enough to suit me I pull them back up and go without them. Back when I took on students I never showed that technique to most of the students unless I was certain they could grasp and develop on the idea of natural. Ace

Sometimes i'll transplant grass clumps to use as guides at flat sets, have had real good luck with that on coyotes. Can't say ive ever caught one with just sticks sticking up though, im sure now that im trying to avoid them though id find every DUMB one in the county, lol.

You don't fiddle around when you dig BIG holes do 'ya Flatset, LOL! Seriously, I would have to say there aren't many coyote, fox or bobcat going to pass a big fresh dug hole with a good food based call lure or meat bait inside. That is real set visibility and top eye appeal! Just the fresh dirt odor and visibility alone would lure in many canines and cats. Thanks for the pictures Flatset! Ace

At sets I use that look similar to J's, for bobcat and coyote I keep the trap pan back about 9" to 10" from the hole and offset right about 1 1/2" to 2". This works real well for me, catch 90% of the cats and coyotes by the right front foot before they ever had a chance to dig into or even touch the hole. The modest step-down of 1/2" or so ensures a good high paw catch too. Ace

What are you using for bait or lure or the combination of both for these big hole sets?
My favorite is half a ground hog, fur and all. Use to pick them up here and there along the road as they got run over. A good glob of a skunky type lure tossed in on top.
Other baits ive used with good results are a hind quarter off a beaver, whole muskrat and was said, a road killed rabbit is awful tough to beat.
If reg's permit you can decorate the hole with feathers also for added appeal. Around commercial chicken house's you can sometimes get a few dead ones from the owner, quarter these up for bait and use the white feathers around the lip of the hole, killer on fox and cats.
As for trap placement about the same as Asa only I usually dead center the trap at this set as it has a 'step down' effect to it and that pretty much puts an animals foot in the trap by itself.
I have at times only dug a hole like this and set a trap at it, no lure/bait or anything and caught fox/coyotes with it. Learned that one from Charlie Dobbins, lol.

thats a very good hole to place a half a skunk. Give the glands a racking after ya stuff it in with a little dirt pushed over it and just the tail fur peeking out the hole. (Local regulations permitting) I'd never do that here in Oregon (-;
