When trying to target grays specifically, I look for a log or limb along a field edge. Make a dirthole set with hole going under log. I especially like Dobbins Purrrfect, and Lenons Muskrat All Call for lures. These seem to be magnets for grays, but don't interest the hounds much. I also usually put a squirt of urine on the trap side of the ridge of dirt.

Luv2:

Dirt hole with heavy blocking on the back and sides. Make it so the only way to get to the hole is to go over the trap. Grays aren't bashful about backing and blocking like some animals are.

The lures mentioned are good ones. You can use a bait as well. Try chunks of canned jack mackerel available at your grocery store, mixed with a little beaver castor and glycerin.

Good luck.

Cameron said it well fence it off so the grey has to step on the "low" spot centered above the pan. Love the hawbakers grey Fox 100. One $4 bottle made me $340. Good luck. All on a dirt hole set.

I second the bacon but i chop it up fine a burn it in a skillet, let cool and pour grease and all into a small tupperware thing and shake it up. When the grease sets up it will come out in chunks. I also use grey fox urine but i dont think it matters. Actually, the only urine i can identify anymore is cat and yote. For fox sets, i just grap one and so far i am about even on reds and greys.

I'm guessing here but I read on an earlier post where they can smell a rabbit track while running the trail, so if that is possible, they should be able to smell the bacon grease even though you have temps in the 20's

I caught a grey last year on bacon grease with sardines mixed and chunky. I used red fox urine.

I caught one the other day in a coon set baited with a cotton ball with peppermint extract stuck in to a hollow log. Didnt bed the trap or anything, just set it there in front of the hole and put a big flat leave over it. It was a suprise to see that fox head come out of that hole...lol

I agree that greys are not picky on what they want to eat. I have caught them on numerouse different baits. Just about any game bird scraps, beaver, pork chop bones. The one store bought bait I found works really well is wind river paste bait 2. I have caught greys with a dab of that alone.

I like a flashy dirthole along travel ways with some guiding. I like a bobcat gland like Cavins feline fix. Greys love it for some reason.

The difference to me is mostly location. But i still take reds and greys from the same sets. I got a cat set out right now and i missed him the first night. Dug out all my beaver meat. I reset the trap with a large dirt pattern from all the digging and added a stick above the hole with feline fix dobbed on it. This morning the whole pattern was covered in grey tracks. Still missed him though but i did get two other greys. One was a urine post set (red fox urine), and the other was a standard dirt hole baited with ground mice. Both these sets where in open fields which is where i get most reds. Most greys i get come from thick bottoms and fire breaks through thick cover.
