It is probably telephone wire. It was laying in a heap in a box so I grabbed some. I prefer old romex if you can get it. Also we have a lot of extra power cords from computers laying around. I will be using those as well. Old broken extensions cords etc. A thick coating that can put up with the ice picking is good.
The beauty of them is when it is cold and set is insulated and you hate to disturb to pull up a set trap. Especially bait that might set for a while. As opposed to house entrances that see action quicker. At least early.

Well, I skinned, fleshed and stretched my mink last night. What a pain in the rear! I skinned it through the mouth, left the feet in and then, went to flesh it. Wow, I didn't realize they were that fatty and the saddle was that tough. I didn't want to use my Necker on it so I used a spoon. Anyhow, it's done and on the board. They sure are big. I think it's 27 inches Nose to base of tail. I put it on a male marten board.

Do these Y/K Delta mink have to be turned? I heard that somewhere.

Random question... how does trapping compare on the road around Fairbanks to what I am used to in the bush? Regulations, access to trap trail, use of land, etc. I want to be prepared should I have to move to the road anytime in my near or distant future.
I have fished around Fairbanks, nothing to write home about. Not as many tourists come up to trap though. I would target fox, lynx, mink, ermine, marten... those animals predominately.
If possible, I will stay out of Fairbanks and be in the North Pole/Salcha area as it is at least somewhat rural... hard to call it that after living in the Norton Sound region.

JH, if I were to guess....the competition is fierce.

IMO, living in the Bush is a cakewalk as far as competition is concerned.

Yeah, I'll put the tape on it and take a picture tonight when I turn it. I haven't decided what I'm going to do with it.

I will probably get it tanned for the wall. It's my first mink. If that's the case, I won't bother to turn it. I was just curious for future catches.

Yes the mink from the delta should be turned if you're gonna sell it.

CB1: My fox season runs from 11/1-3/31

JH: get a copy of the last Alaska Trapper magazine. Some bad conflicts going on around FAI.

Why do they turn Delta Mink and no others? Just curious. I would think they would want to see the hide just like they do with the rest of other mink.

Not true. The delta mink are turned fur out for some (probably traditional) reason. All others are fur in. I guess it could also have something to do with their size since theyare so much larger than other mink. But for some reason it sticks in my head that old man Goldberg told me, in the early 70's, that it's because that's the way it was done 100 years ago.

As a general rule when pretty much everyone trapped in the winter all the otter and mink for sale in Dillingham were turned fur out this was for Goldberg and one of the Canadian buyers brought in by AC company plus the local buyer. The local buyer here still prefers them fur out

White's correct on the history ( fur out ) and size of Kuskokwim mink. At least that's the same explanation I was given in the past.

Here is a picture of the mink on the board. I was off a little with my hand measurements, but the tape tells it all.

Kusko I skinned two big males lately both measuring around the same mark Huge I measured one but I can't remember the exact. They are froze right now. I too skinned the last one for tanning, feet on lips and ears split. I am going to tan it myself and try to sell it. Wonder it our big mink would have any appeal to taxidermists that would pay a bonus for big guys.

Well the new bravo I bought last season continues to let me down. As many of you remember I burned a piston at 60 miles on the machine last Dec. Bought a used one while it was out of commison. (4 actually and sold 3). Used the used one all season. My son put on about 700 mile on the new one in March.
Thought I would use the new one this year and after using it and it running well for the last Month I lost spark a couple of miles out of St. Mary's last night. ;0((
Sat phone to the rescue.
I have a shop manual for it and started the process of elimination. Swapped coil and cid with a good bravo of a friends. Both good. By passed ignition, kill switch and carb/throttle safety.
Last thing was to check resistance on the pulsar/charge coil behind the flywheel. Brown and black wire are supposed to yield 20 ohms. NADA
Dead.
1000 miles. What the heck. So much for getting a new bravo for reliability.
So I retrieved my old reliable used one and will order parts.
Sure glad I was not 70 miles away. ;0)

Here is the latest.
All yamaha dealers in Alaska have to order the part. 7-10 days. $184
So I get on line looking for lower 48 possibilities.
http://www.powersedge.com/ Order online but I ordered on the phone to get priority mail for sure. 231-924-2694
$147 have to order 1-2 days.
They will ship priority mail.
The guys name was Mark and I will be ordering more parts from them. That is quite a savings. OEM Yamaha.

Having a hard time finding a 3 way puller for the clutch. He is looking into it. Anyone have experience on what exactly I need. Anchorage Yamaha said it is something I can get from a autoparts place. There part number is discontinued. Hate to have the part and not a puller.
Headed out with Bravo #2

somettimes those primary clutches do not want to come off, a puller is the way to go, and it IS NOT a 3 way puller......

http://www.mfgsupply.com/m/c/725-603.html?id=hHcATtNA

you can search for the right one, but you really need this....
I think the person was thinking of a bearing puller, which will not work, this one actually forces the clutch off the splined crank.

Len, sorry that you had machine problems but was glad to here that the sat phone didn't let you down. I often wonder as I'm reading the kind of terrain you are running in whether it was working out for you and if you were getting good reception. I never put it to the task when I had it.
good luck with your snow machine.

Edit. Your right guys. I had inadvertently put pull the clutch instead of flywheel which is what I have to pull and gave you guys the wrong info.)

The charging coils are not behind the clutch.( I wrote it wrong. Never had to pull a flywheel on a snowmachine. But the Recoil spring side. You actually sink the 3 bolts in to the same hole you remove the recoil from. I have the shop manual. I used a similar clutch puller as you showed last year when I sent the motor in to be rebuilt. No need to pull the clutch for my job. Just the flywheel magneto.
Daryl the phone has worked great. It has come in real handy a few times.. And a very convenient more times than I can remember. Our signal out here is frustrating but you can get through if you willing to wait sometimes. A lot of time you hit it just right. Sometimes it might be 15 min 20 min. Or signal lasts about 5 -10 min max

season catch

First Marten

Not much for the season but I only trapped over christmas break about 2 and a half weeks with bad conditions. Could only get about half of my line set.

I walk or ski my line so it is not real long.
