OK, here is the deal. I was asked to write an article for the new TrapperMan book. I am bouncing around a couple of different topics, and one of them is "what constitutes a good set. So I want your opinions as young trappers. What do YOU think makes a set a good set. There really are no wrong answers to this, but I want to see some thought. I don't want "the one that has an animal in it" as an answer. LOL. Really think this through.
Also, What do you all think is the most important, or the hardest part of making a set.

lets see some good answers here. Lets show the "older Crowd" on T-man that you young trappers know what you are doing too.

IMO a good set is one that produces different kinds of fur like muskrat and mink and even coon

i beleve any set that is set in the right location, properly made and with a good bait or lure would be the most important set i make. i think the position of the trap in realation to the target species and the location the set is made is the most important. You can make the best set in the world and never catch a target because of the location and the trap placement. They may visit it but if they never touch the pan what is the diffrence?

I believe the effort you put into it, the hope of getting something, location, scent, and trap placement.

Honestly the biggest thing for me is "feel". I guess if I feel like the set looks right and is in a good location I have more confidence in it. If I step back and something seems wrong, I'll change it. This isn't scientific, and I don't put up big numbers by any means, but if nothing else it makes me happy. I'd say the hardest part is maintaining beaver sets in the snow and ice.

i dont know if this counts but if you have faith in the set, if you had on trap say a 1.5 coil and you make a dirthole set a mile in the woods if you dont get anything for a while are you going to pull that set or are you going to walk a mile into the woods and back out to check that trap every day until season ends

LOL. I had a set that I made up in the woods up a mountain side. I walked up that mountain for 3 weeks. And hadn't connected with it, but for some reason, I really believed that set was gonna connect. By the end of the 3rd week though, I said "whether it has a fox in it or not, It is comin out today!!!". LOL. Wouldn't ya know it, it had a beautiful Red in it that morning. But true to my word, I pulled the trap. LOL>

I guess what I want to do is change the question a bit. What do you consider to be a "GOOD" location. I am really searching for a specific answer here. LOL>

NYNOVICE THATS A TRICK QUESTION!!!!!!! because it varys SO much. some say "set on sign", others "set to the right", "to the left" IT VARIES. I would say set near FRESH sign. when i say fresh i mean in the last month give or take a while

LOL. Not really. And as I said there really is not wrong answer, I am just looking for something specific. I Have talked about it before here at T-man, and it was something that Charles Dobbins mentioned in one of his articles. LOL> He talked about what a "GOOD" set was and what all was involved.
I will tell you all this. It was not about Trap placement, it was not about sign (although that never hurts), but rather choosing a place to make your set in accordance to sign etc.

Specific location...well, since I mostly trap cats I like to look for places where there is a creek bottom, usually with lots of cedar growing, close to a clear-cut. I like thickets close to fields edges too. But I seem to catch most of my cats in cubbies made next to a cedar tree, close to water.

For a dirthole, to make it look like an animal made it.

Well a "good" location to me is and area with good sign for the critters you are after.

A "good" set is made in an area that is a good location. Made with clean traps, stakes, and equipment. Properly bedding trap ROCK SOLID. Good baits, lures and fresh pee. Trap placement to bait or lure for target animal. And finally make your sets look natural.

if ur on good location where the animal travels would a good bait, lure really matter? as long as it attracts them to the set which i would guess most lures and baits would do at least if ur right on location where the animals travel alot.

its all about the trapper
if you think it will connect with something it will

next day there was a possum

I feel a good set is one that is selective. It only takes the furbearers you are after. Other than that I would say trap placement.

Making the trap look natural. Make the animal think that nature made it be there. Or for that matter not notice it at all. You need to have guide sticks that lead to your trap too. This makes the animal step between sticks so thay step in your trap. Animals have a tendency to step over and around sticks and twigs. If you are trapping mink dig a hole in the bank and set a trap in front of the hole. The mink will get curious and look in the hole. This will make them step in the trap if you have guide sticks going twords the trap.

Hope this helps a little.

my rule of thumb is< slap the set in near sign, have an effective set PROPER for the place and trap placement n scent
