When dad would go out of state to trap, he'd have lapses in communication with mom. Back then there weren't any cell phones and to call would require a trip to town to use a phone at a phone booth. Dad would write, but his trips to the post office to mail his letters were not frequent.

Of course mom would get a bit P'Od about it, but usually kept her discontent to herself.

One time she hadn't heard from dad for quite some spell. I'm not sure if he was trapping in Western Tennessee, or Arkansas. Anyway, she decided to send him a form letter to fill out. She figured if he only had to check boxes, maybe he'd be more inclined to communicate. Of course this was something she did to make a point - lol. And.... she had a stamped and addressed envelope with it, so all he'd have to do is put the form letter into the envelope and mail it.

Later he wrote an article about this letter in one of the trapping magazines.

Anyway, here's a copy of that form letter. I crack up every time I read it.....

I recall reading that article by your dad and it was as funny then as this letter is now, lol.

The story of him bringing her flowers home when off with Hal trapping is also another good one, think Miz shared that one with me, lol.

Your mom had a great sense of humor and I think that is what helped her raise you to become the fine upstanding citizen of the trapping community that you are. I really got a kick out of that letter! Thanks!

That's funny Paul -- thanks for sharing.

I only met your mom a couple of times but I enjoyed visiting with her each time. I will never forget your mom and i were talking at your booth in Columbia, Missouri for the NTA that year. There were a couple of ladies talking about how dirty thier husbands clothes were when they got home from trapping and your mom says to them
"It's just dirt honey it will wash out and if it doesn't they don't care they will put them on anyways" Not sure if it was what she said or how she said it that struck me as funny but I have never forgotten that.

I can tell you one thing women are all the same regardless of the make or model........... It is quite distressing for my wife as I am gone for long periods of time at times. She accepts it but nonetheless doesnt always like it obviously as was expressed in your moms form letter to Charlie.

No doubt all state hopping trappers deal with this more so then others. We as trappers have the strong burning desire to do what we do and some women just cant or wont cope with such a situation. When one gets older(mature)LOL we just do it and oh well if they moan they moan and that is how it is. They adjust or move on I suppose.

Been down this road for a number of years but I try to keep my away time from home a month at a time. Last winter I was away 4 months in all. The last trapping leg in Kansas was a little over 2 months. A bit longer then normal but I just was not ready to return. \:\)

Each has to establish what is a tolerable time frame for them practically to be away from home and what the Mrs. will allow. Most seasoned married trappers have this part already under control or they are single, unattached at the time, hard core bachelors or just dont give a hoot............... LOL
I am somewhere in the middle of all that.~!!!!!!!

Thanks Paul, I remember that article. I always looked forward to You're Dads writing. I remember one time He was telling a story about when He was in the Armed Forces. He talked of how they maintained the vehicles. He said that there was a certain number of trucks that they had to periotically add gear oil to the rear ends of. He said that He noticed that the ones that they didn't have to add grease to tore up before the others. This showed Him that adding the fresh grease extended the life of the gears. This article, above all others, showed me that He studied every aspect of life, whether trapping related, or not.
