I use an old hand crank one that I bought at an auction 20 years ago.

I welded an extension on the crank so I get TONS of leverage. I would break the thing if I gave it half my strength. I just turn it nice and slow, and if it binds even a little bit. I back off and stir. I can grind all of a mouse, and all of a squirel except skull and femurs.

Graet for grinding fish and crawdads as well.

electric ones are not designed to grind scales, and bones and hair.

one of two things always happens to the electric ones.

1 they bind up and because its eletric, they dont quit pushing, thereby tearing up the motor or shaft.

2 they dont bind up, and because its strong they tear up the bearings, or the blades.

when i hand crank, i can feel it start to bind, and since i have a massive lever involved, im bearly putting any energy to the mechanism so, i can back off before I tear anything up.

I use an old hand grinder, good for small, user batches. Run it through the course plate, then the fine one. Half frozen chunks help on the first grind. Not the easiest way, but the cheapest and it works. They're always at yard sales or flea markets. I ground a couple gal. of paste bait this year no problem.

Sure have burnt up a lot of food grinders and processers in my day. I saw an electric one at the NTA for $250. Should have bought it....seems you never take enough money to those things! If I don't take at least a Grand, I might as well stay home!
