what are you trapping? coon? If so Make sure you push your chain in the mud. Raccoon have very sensitive feet and if the feel your chain they will pull on it and pull your trap away from your set. Stake solid! Coon are very strong make sure you have a solid stake, also use drowners wherever you can if you have the time.

Hard water- its not as thick as you think.
soft water- its deeper than you think.

A walking stick can help you find deep holes in cloudy, muddy water.

One Pop showed me when I was a kid, was when you find tracks on a sandbar or in the mud, use your boot to splash water up over them and obscure the tracks. It serves 2 purposes, first it lets you see any fresh tracks and second it hides the tracks from your competition.

And as stated above always set going upstream.
