Jonathan Jonathan trapper Registered: 12/23/06 Posts: 1814 Loc: Northwestern New York	Commercial grade, pressed oil verses homemade, sun rendered oil will outlast both of us. How old is that bottle of cod liver oil you have not opened, or used for 30 years? It will smell the same as the day you bought it. Just a random oily thought. Jonathan

Glass of course will maintain the true odor for the long term best. I have heard of the home brewers of it complain about it going rancid. Is that because it was not decanted, or filtered properly? I have only made very small amounts over the years - used it up before it had a chance to carry over into another year. Jonathan

If you have a half-full plastic bottle of fish oil at the end of the season, it will collapse the bottle and turn dark and nasty by the following year. I think the fish oil oxidizes, if that's possible, when its allowed to drink in air. I keep all my fish oil bottles filled slam to the top and I've had some as long a five years with no adverse affects. When using fish oil in formulating lures, I will always squeeze the air out of a partially full plastic bottle of fish oil befor putting it back on the shelf. Keeps it nice and fresh for the next time I need it. _________________________

As Paul stated I have found processed pressed fish oils to be more prone to vaccuum plastic bottles if not filled to the top. I have very marginal vaccuming with sun rendered clean trout oil.Fish oils like many things are heat sensitive. I feel I have to put in my 2 cents worth on that one, since I learned first hand from T.B. of Pa.. who is, as many know, the "king of sun-rendered trout oil". I make my trout oil and catfish oil, as I learned from Terry, in 30 and 55 gallon drums. It is placed out in direct sun all summer...no hoses or cheese cloth or all that other stuff you hear about to prevent flies and gas built up. Just a dark barrel 3/4 full of fish. T.B. produced (and probably still does) produce 75% or more of all the trout oil in the US. Most dealers in the supply business, bought from him, as it is the best trout oil in the nation. I have spent time at Terry's and learned first hand how it was done on a large scale. Sun-rendered trout oil spoiling? $\:D$ Hahahaha. It doesn't! You rot fish to get it! Now if you contaminated it with something, sure...but otherwise, no. Why would you hang on to it anyway? It is a real money maker out on the trapline. I use several gallons a year on the trapline and take hundreds of 'coon a year with it alone. Now salmon oil spoiling or a difference in salt water VS fresh water... I have no experence in, although I have used it and it is a very good fur producer as well. I buy mine like most trappers through a dealer. However carp, catfish and trout oil, I make it all here and is one of the reasons my snare lines are as successful as they are. $;\)$ I am currently working on a deal to buy dog-salmon in Washington state from the Native people...if all goes well I will be producing salmon oil and ground and chunk salmon bait for mink, martens and other flesh eating furbearers. $\:\)$ Not sure how sun-rendered salmon oil would do...the "pressed" salmon oil is a real pleasure to work with.

If the caps are loosened a bit this obviously will not occur but then you run the risk of odor bleed and possible spills. Glass is the best but not user friendly in the shop or on the line. I believe the reason for such an occurance is the fact the material is still a bit active with some gases still developing (CO2) from the material and actually forcing the oxygen from the container via the slight breatheing properties of plastic. This is a very slow and steady process therefore the container holds the memory even once the cap is removed.Carbon dioxide will push out and displace oxygen. The same process that makes a CO2 uthanazia chamber work for the purpose of uthanizing an animal. The drawn bottle indicates that the pull of the internal pressure has remained constant within the container and has slowly been drawn in as the displacement of the oxygen has taken place with refererence to the bottle size.
