Hi, my name is not important, and I only own 2 #2 coilsprings, but could some of you more experienced trappers help me out on the details of a trench set for coyote? Since I've been trapping, I've only harvested 3 muskrats and one opossum so far, and would like to harvest a coyote. What's the basics and or mechanics of this set, and why is it so productive, as opposed to say a flat set or dirt hole set? Thank you in advance. Yours humbly, a novice trapper.
Post Script Pictures would be of great help.

i have tried that set a few times and caught yotes and fox in them. i would not make it my bread and butter set for a yote.
maybe someone that uses this set more than i have can chime in and give you some words of wisdom on this set. i would probably learn to master the dirthole and flatsets.
whatever set you choose to go with, pay attention to the sign at your set and learn from your misses. it will come together for you

Mr. dcambell, Thank you for your reply. I've got down pat the construction of a flat set and dirthole, and have found that a trench set goes in equally as quick. If a coyote finds interest in this set as the same as a flat set or dirt hole, but must work twice as hard to discover the contents of what's in the hole, thereby increasing the odds of said coyote to step on my planted trap, wouldn't it be a more effective set? Thanks.

Thank you for the keen advise Mr. j lord, but wolverines are an unharvestable species in my locale. Could some of the more experienced trappers please assist me in my endevours? I've noticed numerous views, and only a handful of replies. Thank you in advance.

You'll be fine as long as you fill the trench with water.

What #2 coilsprings do you have. If they are the old square jawed victors you might want to beef them up a bit. Make shure you have strong springs in them or a four coil kit. Maybe even a spring shock in the chain. If you have acess to a welder I would put a center baseplate with a D ring in the center. Coyotes have been known to tear up squared jaw # 2's.

Mr. ADC, while I appreciate the smug humor, I'm not in this for targeting and harvesting muddy K9's, but simply seeking some seasoned replies to harvesting coyotes utilizing a trench set.
What would be the distance from punched hole to pan, say 6-8 inches deep, a slight mound that is neccessary in front of the loose jaw preventing possible toenail scrapes while diggers are present? Thanks in advance for your time.

The trench set can be very effective however, I would not use it as an exclusive set. The beauty of the dirthole and the flat set is that it is versatile. You can make dirtholes, double dirtholes, and even triple dirtholes, You can make big dug holes or mouse holes, you can even use a hole in a piece of wood as one of your holes or the only hole. with the flat set you can use a rock, a cornstalk, even a skull as your post. You can use a chunk of charred wood, or just a block of wood. You can keep it wide open or turn it into a walk through. My Point is this, it doesn't take all that much to get the curiosity of a K-9 up, however, it doesn't take much to educate them a bit either. By keeping a variety of sets on your line, you can generally avoid educating them to one type of set, which will happen. LOL. Trust me. The trench set is really only a good set when the terrain, and situation calls for it. And it is a tricky set to master. You really need to understand how a K-9 works a set to make the trench set effective. If the trap placement isn't right you will get a lot of step overs and tripped traps with no animals. LOL. If your catches are down, then I would say this to you. really get out and do some legwork. Find out where the animals are moving, and target them there. I am not talking about finding one lone set of tracks that look like they have been washed out for 2 weeks. I am talking about finding locations where there are multiple sets of tracks. even if it is the same yote or fox, if there is multiple sets of tracks varying in age, then you will know that you are on an established travel route, and not just one that the animal happened to be on. If the animals arent there, I don't care how pretty, or stinky your set it, it aint gonna connect. You have stated that you have the dirthole and flatset down, but apparently that is not the case if you are not being successful by using them. LOL. I have seen a lot of sets where guys were mighty proud of how well they made them, only to find they wouldn't connect. Most of the time it has to do with something simple you have done wrong. For example, if you are in coyote country and you over guide your sets, you will probably not be successful. LEARN the habits of the type of animal you are targeting. Also if you are having trouble connecting with Dirtholes and Flat sets, maybe you have scent issues. if you are leaving foreign odors at the set, you will decrease your catch drastically. Things like aftershave, or gas, or oil, can and will cause you huge problems when it comes to k-9's.

Go back to playing golf, I am sure you are better at that than trapping........ Because you suck.

You could have picked something other than golf Jerry....I can't stand that sport. Although I did spend a couple hours hitting golfballs with a baseball bat one time.
Now, Jerry, you are of the modest type, and I know you catch more coyotes than most members here. Any insight on the trenchset, or should I continue plugging along with the basics. Thanks....Novice trapper
