The unnerving part about that, is when you get grabbed by a bear and the first thing your partner does is jump on his snowmachine and tear off! \:\)

Okay seems you guys need to be redirected once again.
Seems everyone is feeling their oats. Or was that hopps \:D

Heard from Joe Matte today. I sent the last 18 of my marten in to him for the Western Canadian Auction. They were to late for the nafa where the bulk of them went. So I get to see a little of both auctions come May.
He pasted on a trick that I had not heard of before that makes sense. I am sure it is old news to some of the seasoned trappers on here but here it is for what it is worth.
The topic of thawing out marten came about due to a mishap I had with one I experimented with thawing in the tent. Little too warm too fast and it slipped in a spot.
I asked him if he knew any tips.
He said the best way to thaw them in a situation like a tent is to ace bandage them. Squash down the fur which decreases the insulation of the fur. He said it make a big difference. He said it works especially well on big animals like wolves.
Take a lot of ace bandages! \:D I thought about just stripping linen but he said the elastic of the bandage really helps.
I am curious to try it. I want to thaw my marten out in camp next winter to skin.

White I have thought a lot about what you said prior to this season and am in agreement with you.
A tent camp every 20 miles. No farther than 10 miles to walk if you have problems.

I snowshoed 7 miles one evening due to a stupid mistake. Wasn't to bad. Made 10 seem like a a pretty attainable walk in a bind.
Anyway I have the three tents and two stoves at this point. In the market for the third stove.

I was able to fly for about 2 hours at the end of March over my entire line and a lot more. Videoed the whole trip and took close to 300 picts from a high altitude. Looks awesome and the footage will help imensely. I am already looking forward to improving on this year’s season.

That Ace bandage trick makes sense. Think I'll give it a try. If it works, it should cut down the time on things like wolf and wolverine.

The tent camp thing can be a real confidence enhancer. Nice to know that "home" isn't too far away. The older you get the closer the camps need to be for some reason :-)) At least that's what I've been told.

There is a yet more detailed account of "Keyo's" fight with the brown bear on the Oshetna (last Friday) in this morning's ADN.

Remember that it IS the ADN; some of what is written could be true.....

http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/wildlife/bears/attacks/story/8803434p-8704592c.html

What likely really happened is that when that bear got a taste of Lynn, and realized she had bit into a trapper, she spit him out!

OK guys. When did Fish get to be a Mod on the big board, too? Now we all have to really watch our P's and Q's over there too. \:\)

And what about White and Otterman. How come you two didn't make the cut to the Major's? \:\)

Hey Family Trapper,
I use that ace bandage trick often. It really works well. You usually only have to wrap the torso with it because the legs feet and tail thaw fast enough as it is.Thats the problem on like a large wolf for example. The legs, feet, and tail thaw in a day or so.Meanwhile the body takes 3-4 days to thaw.Especially if its really cold out.Have you noticed how long it take to thaw something that was frozen at say -40F at room temperatures compaired to something that was brought in from 15F.Of course that is a extra 55F difference in temperature.Give it a try.

Also on another note.Once you skin something, and you run out of time to finish it entirely you have to refreeze until time allows.Leave it skin side out when you put it in a plastic bag and put it back out side.It will freeze much faster and thaw much faster.I've seen where a skinned, unfleshed wolf will still take two days to thaw.So i always figured it took atleast two days to freeze up when you put it back outside. So if you add that all up.Wolf gets caught in snare.Takes 3-5 days to freeze solid because of the hairs insulating value.Bring it inside to thaw.Thaws for another 3-4 days before it is thawed enough to skin.By now it is midnight. Got to get to bed so you put it back outside It takes 2 days for it to freeze up again. Finally a week later you get time to finish it.You set it back inside to thaw for 2 more days.Thats 10-13 days that the hide was in a enviroment that was somewhere between thaws and frozen.

I have a torn anterior medial meniscus, and most likely a lateral meniscus tear as well.

sucks to hear on the knee. Nothing like being a gimp for MIN 6 months. Nice thing about Meniscus is its not a ligament. Bad thing is, it will get WORSE (even after surgery) when you get older. Usually they just remove the torn parts, sometimes try to repair, but usually just remove damaged, and therefore just reduces your cartiledge.

Owwwwy

Ok boys and girls.....I may need a lawyer!

I just served lynx stew for our school's potluck. Some people loved it and some thought it was a little strong. Of course, I was evil and didn't tell them what it exactly was until they tried it. All I know is the crockpot is empty. I'll be keeping the meat from rest of the lynx I catch in the future.

Nothing special, but this is how I cooked it.

-sauted the meat in butter, garlic salt and lowrey's
-cut up potatoes, carrots and onion
-poured in two jars of turkey gravy
-crock potted until the meat is fork tender

We might have it on video, I'll have to check. Obviously I wasn't the one with the camera.

Anna Nicole Smith tried this on my line a couple years ago and really got whupped.

Hupurest: You're right it is easier with a trap on the back foot than the front. They like to rake those back feet on their victim's guts.

Not to veer from the question of White's claim to Anna's "assests", but a quick comment about the bear eating (notice I didn't say killing) Lynn and the pic in the ADN: That pic was taken a few moments before the mom decided to show her gratitude. Now that is a memento. OH yeah, living is a nice momento too.

Okay, now you guys can go back to declaring W17's supremacy over 3 legged fur balls and hard plasitc Barbie dolls.

Sorry about the knee. My old man tore his meniscus in a gnarly winter accident years ago (fell over cross country skiing) . Surgery wasn't all that bad and his was torn to [Please excuse my language... I'm an idiot]. He did have a new knee put in this past winter,(worn out), and that was BAD. Some people it goes smooth. Not him. A couple months of PT and he can finally walk a couple miles.
He hobbled around for quite a while on the meniscus tear before finally deciding on surgery. He said he wished he'd done it right away. Hope yours isn't that bad.

Protect your wheels guys!!
