I read somewhere than bark mulch is often treated with chemicals and mushrooms growing in it shouldn't be eaten. Just something to think about.

Caution is all ways best.
These mushrooms are the fruit of the mycelium which is usually intertwined within the cambium layer of the host tree.
They live from the same nutrients that the trees does.
Usually deep within the rooting system
White oak in this case.
Were this any type of evergreen tree , this would be a issue for sure.
Think pine pitch ,ect.
I felt pretty safe with an oak tree hosting.
The minimal ground cover shouldn't be an issue.
But yes allways use some caution when eating any wild mushrooms.
