I would not bet that is a shaggy mane. You best identify it real good. There is a poison mushroom that has those little dots on the of of it. Most if not all shaggy mane mushrooms I have found has always been in the fall.

Thanks for the input. There were a few around those that had inked up. That's what made me think it was them. I did not pick them since there were just a few and of my uncertainty. Ive been going out just about everyday waiting on the morels, and those few and a few over ripe puff balls are all I've seen.

I would also do the spore print to be sure. Did the piece you cut off the mushroom turn black? Also the stem would be Fibrous, hollow. But having said all that I would eat it. grin

I am an avid mushroom hunter having collected and eaten 12 different wild varieties of mushroom. I can tell you with 100% certainty that those are shaggies and are delicious. If you really wanna be sure yourself cut a stem in half and if it's hollow and has a cottony looking string of mycillium then you know without a doubt that they are. Just the fact that you said there were others that had deliquesed (turned to inky goo) tells me they are in the copronus genera and are safe to eat. Hope this helps!

I also have never picked shaggy mane in the spring, only in the fall. Do what you want, but be darn careful about what you put in your mouth. Mushrooms are nothing to play with. I know you said that they melted and looked like ink when melted and that is a good sign, but be darn careful. you should really take a spore print to be safe.

I really thank you guys for the input. I did a spore print on a few more that I found. What exactly should the outcome have been if i have done the print right.
You guys say you haven't seen them in the spring, but I notive most of you guys are very north of me. Our spring days are very similar to our fall days here so maybe???? They could be out both spring and fall here?

Shaggy manes will grow just about anytime of year if the temps are above freezing and there is adequate moisture. They especially like the sides of roads and any other compacted soil. They generally grow from chunks of woody debris buried during road construction and other "disturbed" soils. They are also found in grassy areas quite often. How'd that spore print turn out? I would imagine the cap would have just turned to an inky puddle on the paper. The wife and I have already started picking Morels here in central Oregon so it's a strange year for us as they're a few weeks early. Those guys up north might have just not been looking for the Shaggy Manes during the spring cause they were focused on the Morels smile I used to live in South Bend, Indiana and the Morel season there in the Midwest is a big deal and for good reason. Hope I helped with this info it's great to see other people that are interested in trapping and mushroom hunting like myself.

I have found a few isolated specimens of shaggies in the spring. When you get the right weather, a few willl pop up. Nothning like the fall though.
