Honey mushrooms. - 11/02/13 01:28 AM
Anyone eat them? I've got some in the back yard that finally kill the tree. A hackberry grew in it s place and they don't seem to bother it.

I get Honey mushrooms on a stump in my yard quite often.I do NOT eat them though....I am 99.99% sure of the I.D., but that other .01% won't let me eat them in case they are the deadly look-alike fungus called, aptly, the Deadly Galerina. If you eat one of those, no matter what you do afterwards, you die.
Honey mushrooms have a white spore print and the Galerina have a brown. I have ate honeys before but prefer the more easily identifiable ones like puffballs chickens etc. J.Morse is right you only get one chance with the Galerina and they grow right next to honeys.

Thanks. I've always been careful.
