I was wondering if anybody knows where I can get a good reference book to start trying to dig some roots.

Try A Digger's Guide to Medicinal Plants by Allen Lockard and Alice Q Swanson. You can get it for $20 from American Botanicals p.o. box 158 Rt.FF Eolia, Missouri 63344 or www.americanbotanicals.com A very good booklet in my opinion.

Peterson Field Guides there are several... like Eastern/central Medicinal plants
Edible Plants, one on mushrooms. they have great pics for identification.
