Fungi ID help - 04/24/13 01:57 AM

I have a question for all the Wildcrafters,
I found these dried up fungi on what looked like a dead oak tree. Are these last year's Sheepshead? If they are, will they grow back in the same place this summer? Thanks in advance for any info you have on this.

Well I found what I think is more of the same fungi. Here are some more pictures. It appears to have one central "stem". It doesn't have any gills on the underside of the fungi, which I think suggests that it is hen of the woods or sheeps-head. This is just a guess though. I am very new to mushroom hunting. The thing that puzzles me is that it is growing on a rotting oak tree log. In my mushroom hunting book it says that sheeps-head grows at the base of live oak trees, on the root system. Has anyone ever found a sheeps-head on a dead oak log before?

Could be chickens/sulfer shelf mushrooms. I would check it out in early fall.
