Foxkidd44 its been rough. You should just get out though and wander. Look for deer scrapes trapping spots. Life is good when your wandering. The bounus is the seng. Even shot a few squirrels.

You need to publish a book on fal edible mushrooms. Take pictures of the good and the bad put them side by side. I see a whole bunch around here but have no idea what they are except puffballs.

525 sounds like a fair price.

Re: Dry ginseng prices? - 09/25/12 07:26 PM

My price is 500, but you have fancier seng than I do. I could 535.00 or a little better on that typ of seng with certification papers.

Re: Dry ginseng prices? - 10/03/12 02:03 AM

The seng is different to most years the smaller stuff didnt seem to make it through the drought. Nothing on the middle of the hills but if your persistent and look in well shaded woods thats been logged and has enough shade grown back there is some big stuff older sang that I know wasnt there for the past 3 or 4 years. Its alot of walking and fewer roots but Ive found some dandy seng.

Hummm.... let me think.

Three pound of green seng = 2 pounds of dry seng, right?

At $525.00/pound dry 2 dry pounds of seng = $1050.00 (buyer #1)

At $200.00/pound green 3 pounds = $600.00 + seed (buyer #2)

Any questions????

Southwest Wisconsin area.
What do you do with lesser quality root. Not all green seng will bring top price. I had Chinese buyers wanting to buy 20 to 30m year old root at a nice price but dropped bthe price quite a bit on 10 year old root and if it was less than 10 years old or to small, they didn't want it.
Personally I won't buy root that has had all the nice root picked out of it by a person selling his green root at high prices.
Another problem selling green root is going to end up biting all of us in the rear end some day. The way this is going to happen is, once the Chinese have our wild root re established in their country, they won'r need to buy our root anymore.

Not sure about your root, but our area equates to 3-4lbs green to 1 lb of dry.

The early root weighs less and will take more to make a full dry pound. The later root is heavier and therefore can see 3:1 ratios.
With this dry season, it seems like even the larger roots are weighing in lighter than past seasons.

Re: Dry ginseng prices? - 10/04/12 09:26 PM

A lot depends on what month and what time of the month that the seng was dug as to how much wet it takes to make a dry lb. Rule of thumb it takes about 3 1/2 to make a lb. of dry. Later in the fall I have seen it drop to just below 3 lbs. Dry seasons make lighter weighing root usually.
