American Beautyberry - 08/18/12 04:22 PM

We have lots of American Beautyberry growing in our area. I've read where the ripe berries can be made into wine or even jelly. Does anyone here know of it's uses or have ever tried using them before? Advice please!

I have a big beauty berry bush in my yard, the berries are real sweet, but it might take a big big bunch to make anything out of them. They don't have a big bunch of pulp- on them and the seed takes up a lot of space in the berry. They are very pretty in the late fall with their purplish berries on them. Once the leaves fall off the bushes, the birds love the berries and visit the bush everyday untill they get all the berries they can possibly eat. Usually the bushes have berries all the way to the end of the stalk and once the berries on the heavier stalk is done, I tie up the ends to a heavier stalk so the birds can eat the remainder of the berries.
It is fun to watch the birds once they get out to the end of the branches, sepecially the lower branches close to the ground. I hsve watched birds stand on the ground and look up at the berries and then jump into the air to try and get at the berries.
