Pa seng season????? - 08/11/12 10:48 PM

Called my seng buyer today for an early price. He was not given one yet. Told me the season didnt start until sept. 1st this year. And that he can't buy until the 10th. Is this true? Any PA. diggers hear of this?

I believe the laws a set so that the seeds, that must be replanted where the roots are dug, are ripe. I'd think you could find the digging laws on the web.

Same here in Wisconsin. Seeds are ripe and falling off already.

I am getting some bad vibes on this years seng market. I had one of my major buyers tell me he didn't need any seng.

Don, do you have an idea what the approx. price will likely be?
Will it effect the price of seed?
Do you expect other roots to have little demand also, or they unrelated?

The price will not bother seed prices and Ginseng should have no effect what so ever on other root prices.
I don't know what is going on at this time, but, I have tried to contact another Chinese buyer and can't get any responce from him on his phone or email. This may all be just me getting a bit antsy, but, I can usually get some kind of idea from somebody that can tell me what is going on. It is a little on the early side at this time, but usually I can get some info early on.
I have an idea things are not to rosy in China at this time and they also know we have had a terrible drought. I do know they do not want Ginseng going back to 800 or 1000 a lb. They can't live with that price and ever sence it was that high, the market has been real squirelly. Late last season the market started to fail just as it did theb year before that.
I think it is going to be a real tough market this year, only time will tell.

when you get on all the websites you can't get a definate answer.everything says it is supposed to be changed and wait for updates but the updates haven't came out yet.i know they are really trying to get a handle on the population in p.a. and was told they are going to go extreme with reg's right of the bat then back off on regulation if reason is seen to warrant it.

talked to a couple of dealers yesterday and they both said it has been changed to sept.1.they both said they can't buy green till sept.1 and dry till sept.15.can't argue with what they are doing i guess,we are our own worst enemies and seng is a natural resource we can't afford to lose.still cannot get someone from the state to return a call though.

i called to harrisburg to check on this and the law is still august 1st on digging.........i have found most times that late october to early november is the time to sell...not late sept or early oct....most dealers will low ball you if you sell early because of the market not beign stabilized that early and they dont want to lose money.....

i for one refuse to dig seng for under 500 a lb dry weight....i feel its worth more than that for all my time to dig any amount.....and besides the longer you let those mature plants provide berries the better seng harvest you will have in the long run....

i have always bought stratified seed and when i dug wild seng i always re-broadcasted my own strat seed to replentish what i have taken....i have not dug any in about 4 years but i do have some great patches to go dig at when i decide to go because of my re-planting practices....i have been doing that for about 15-16 yrs now and it will pay off when or if i decide to go back and harvest the mature plants out of those places....

I wish more diggers were like you. When seng was up to $1,000 lb. i lost several thousand 3 to 5 year olds to slob diggers. Made me sick. Always replant your seed or close by where it will grow better.

Hopeyou're wrong don (seldom is) I really depend on selling some gensieng to make ends meet. How, if any, will a short gensieng harvest affect other root prices?
