Found these berries in northwestern Nebraska. Does anyone know what they are?

All the grapes I have ever seen have been on vines with a big leaf and usuallt climbing a tree or fenceline. These are low to the ground and spead in low lying areas. Could they just be a differant type of grape?

The plant is Creeping Barberry (Mahonia repens). It's sometimes called Oregon Grape. The berries are sour, but they can be used to make jelly. They're best after a couple of frosts in the fall. The leaves and stem are poisonous. The green berries are mildly toxic as well.
By the way, the smaller leaves growing with the Creeping Barberry are Common Snowberry. It will have white berries that are not edible.
