I will buy mayapple for 2.75 per lb. I think it is illegal to dig dwarf ginseng. I have only found a couple pieces in my life. The root of the mayapple is what I want and it must be nice and clean and the root must be dehydrated to the point that when you bend the root, it snaps into pieces.

shew...i could get you a lot of mayapple...but at $2 a lb it would take the whole woods to make $20. what do they use mayapple for Don? i cant stop running into bloodroot this year and not a lick of ginseng.

Hey crawdad, the mayapple root dries pretty heavy. It don't loose as much in drying as bloodroot does. Dig some and keep check on how it dries. Anyway the price is 2.75 per lb. Heck I can use lots of bloodroot and lots of goldenseal root plus you can dry the tops on the seal and sell them for 2.00 or better;
Not sure on the mayapple about it's use so I won't say what it is used for.

mayapples have quite a few mrdicinal uses,

but Improper use of this plant could be very dangerous.....don't EVER try to use them yourself. The roots and rhizomes are used as a purgative. A resin from the plant, called padophyllin, has been used to treat venereal warts. The resin is extremely allergenic; it exhibits anti-tumor activity. Externally, mayapple is used as a treatment for warts and skin eruptions. Internally, a very small amount of root may be used as a cathartic (Laxative), a worm expellant, for jaundice, constipation, hepatitis, fever and syphilis.

again, DO NOT try to use this plant for home medicinal uses.......everything except the fruit is very poisonous.

pharmecuetical companies have methods to know what predetermined amounts are safe for human consumption.

I would start digging now on mayapple. It dies off by around july in my area. It is one of the first plants to die off in the woods. Not all of it dies down, but a lot of it does. Same goes with bloodroot in my area. Once it starts getting hot, bloodroot starts dieing off for the year.

Re: Does anybody buy? - 05/10/12 07:27 PM

don is 100% correct....dig those apples now..........in a few months they'll die back, making it tougher to find a good patch to dig.

you can dig quite a bit in a very short time..at least i can........use a round point shovel.........mayapples aren't very deep at all.

i actually dig it while resting on my knees.........mayapples are probly 3 inches or so under the ground.

Flat rate boxes is not the best way to go sometimes. Check your weight and box size on your puter and compare prices.

The second plant from the top is starflower (Trientalis borealis). The plant in the third and fourth photos is white rattlesnakeroot (Prenanthes alba).
