My wife and I always were aware that 'seng was on our farm. We found jack in the pulpit and other plants which we thought may have been ginseng. A few days ago- wow- we accidentally stumbled upon a few plants and dug a root and it became evident that it was seng. We certainly can understand all posts asking help identifying the plant. hope all folks find the same answers since the pleasure isn't in the money value but lies in being a part of a select group of people who get intrinsic rewards from nature.

Ginseng does not have a woody stalk. You may have found sassparilla. It looks very similar to seng, but has a woody stalk. Most seng plants will range from 10 inches tall to as big as 2 ft. or maybe a little more. I have never saw a waist high Ginseng plant. I could tell you some stories that my diggers have told me and one especially comes to mind. He said he was walking around the woods looking down, when all of a sudden, his head ran into a big seng plant. I don't believe that ever happened but the same fella told me that seng has some kind of spiritual powers to it. I also don't believe that. But being a buyer for almost 40 years, I have heard lots of stories.

I've been thinking the same thing! If I had to guess, I doubt that we have much sang out here on the Eastern Shore. I always thought that was found more in the woods in the mountains. This is a good question for some local elders though-- I mean talking to folks here about old time plant remedies, woodsways and stuff.

The Maryland Native Plant Society might also be a good resource too. They are not too active on the Eastern Shore, but seem to have regular events around Baltimore.

GWC: Give me a holler and we can kick around some ideas.

I'm near Rising Sun, MD. Look on north-facing slopes in wooded areas -it's along the river hills near Port Deposit.
