For All You Genseng Hunters - 09/12/11 02:34 AM

Thought you all would like to see this. My father-in-law found this monster 'sang yesterday. It weighed 1.04 lbs. green weight. He said it had 14-4 prong plants growing out of it. We counted 11 different roots sprouting off the main beam.
We used a dollar bill for reference not what he would take for it!

Some of the other 'sang he found around the big one.

All of it he found on the same hillside.

My father-in-law with 2 of the bigger roots of the bunch.

A fella I dig seng with found a plant that had 12 4 prong tops comming out of it. been about 15 years ago. The root was big , but didn't weigh much. It was real corky.

As I have never dug Seng. Illegal around here. Don't really know for sure what it looks like.
So now I have a question.
You guys are talking 4 prongers coming out of them ??
Can you help me understand this term.
Thx for the education your gonna give me.
Maybe a photo?

Thats a GIANT root pappy! Biggest I've ever dug was just a little over 5 oz. Nice find!

ohbuyer, thats one pretty 5. Used to dig a couple every season but haven't dug a 5 in 2 or 3 years now. (nice 3 in the back ground)

My father in law put this big root on e-bay for a while. Bidding just ended. He was offered $580.00 but didn't meet his reserve price. I guess to the root buyer it goes.

So did he sell the root for 580? That would be a heck of a single root price, matter of fact, it would be a super fantastic price for a root.

No, Don, he didn't sell. Thought it is worth more than that.

That root dry will weight 1/3lb maybe more right?
I'm pretty sure the root buyer wont come close to what he was offered on eBay

Couldn't agree more. He didn't ask advice, I didn't give any. Maybe he wanted more $ for the sentimental value of it. cry

It would be hard to part with a trophy like that!

Re: For All You Genseng Hunters - 10/05/11 01:56 AM

I'd have taken the 580 in a heart beat for that root. While it is big, some buyers will grade it as woods grown because of its smoothness and lack of age. The real valuable roots have age (30-50 yrs) and very tight ring patterns on the root bodies.

If I was him I'd put that sucker back on eBay!
