Wildcrafting, going alittle extra - 06/10/11 03:23 PM

Some of you may know that I'm a grower of Medicinal Plants as well as a Wildcrafter. This is one of my beds of Goldeseal which are in raised beds.Any questions on how to do this are welcome. Later I will add to this post when I harvest the seeds.

The last 2 pics are the stems coming off 1 root. One plant has 9 tops and the other 12 and all tops producing seeds.

Raised beds...all drainage

I plant from seed and rootlets ( which I grow here)

Soil is loose and I do lime my beds every 2 years.I also harvest the tops then cover in oat straw...never wheat straw

Do you have better success with seed or rootlets? Will you have any seeds for sale? Thanks

kctapper,I do have better success with rootlets, but on the other hand the seeds do really well also. I have found that as soon as you harvest the seeds they should be planted.
The only real problem with starting from seeds is I'm pretty sure every slug, snail,or leaf eating insect will come from 20 miles away to eat them as soon as they break ground.
I usually harvest seeds July 4th weekend. I will add pics to the Goldeseal post and after I do that get ahold of me.

Could we start the plant from seed in the same things we use for other garden plants started from seed, then transplant? Tom

Could you use the same seed treatment as on 'seng and get better slugg protection? Also I started my first bed with sand mixed into the soli..it was free and I thought it may help keep soil a little looser and was going great till walnut trees [I suspect them] killed off lots of my plants.

As soon as they turn red.I just pick them and smashed the seeds from the fruit and plant.I plant mine in starter beds(boxes) outside with a screen over them. Some people bury the whole red berry. Then transplant them when they are 2 years old every 4 or 5 inches.
