Preserving Sweet Corn?

Preserving Sweet Corn? - 08/31/23 09:24 PM

What is the best way too preserve a gallon of fine ground sweet corn?
Should it be preserved like a gallon of meat?
I normally use 1 cup SB. and 1/2 OZ. MP for a gallon of meat.
Just wondering if their is a different approach to preserving plants vs. meats?
I have an idea for a sweet bait, using sweet corn and cultured eggs for the base. Thanks!!

Well you know me, I'm mainly a coyote / bobcat trapper. So mainly coyotes!
Although I think many animals would be attracted too this base material.

What I've used on fruit bases with success. Not sure how it would work on corn

Yes Sir Thanks! I will look into the Potassium Sorbate.
Them coyotes will eat all kinds of fruit & vegetables in season around here. My house cats will eat sweet corn also.

I've tested that kind of stuff cause they will eat it here too. Just doesn't have the level of attraction I expect out of a bait or lure though. At least not here. But might be different in your country. Just don't get caught up in the idea that because they will eat it, it has a lot of attraction. I'll eat a hotdog if it convenient and there isn't much else to chose from but I'm not going to far out of my way or putting to much effort into getting one

Good example with the hotdog. You are probably right on the use of a so so ingredient like sweet corn. For coyotes. Plenty of better ingredients.
I made a good batch of cultured eggs this spring and have been experimenting with different ways to utilize it.
Have made several baits/lures using the eggs. Always looking for one more to try lol.
Looking forward to trapping season to see how good these new formulas will work? Hopefully get some testing done before season starts.

That sweet corn and egg base should be a good early season coyote bait. Add a touch of some Sweet Corn Essence Oil and get a better odor effect. You might want to substitute your fresh corn for some cheap canned sweet corn. That stuff will last long enough using it straight long before it may sour, or something gets into a set with it.

Or,

Mix some granulated sugar, S. Benz, and Vodka into a brine, then soak/stir your corn for a few days prior to mixing it with your egg base. Ladle off your corn then use as needed. Keep your brine for other batches.

Thanks Bob, interesting the sweet corn oil vs the real corn.
Also thanks for teaching a bunch of us how to culture eggs!
Such a nice material to work with.

I find corn mildly attractive to coyotes but it blends well with other substances and holds some smells well. When blended with other materials it definitely attracts them here. Fermented eggs is one I use in the blend.
