Do many of you set the OOS without the setters?

Unless one has the hands the size and strength of the Incredible Hulk, one nearly has to use setters. The setters are also useful in a softly dry firing the OOS checking for a root, stone, mulch or debris (along the trap legs' pathway) in the trap set. Holding on to the setters while tripping the trap will accomplish this. Oversize setting tools help in this regard. I'd probably only want shake hands once with anyone setting this trap without setters!

I got in a situation today where I needed another trap and couldn't find my setters. I always figured it was impossible. I figured I'd work with what I had & give it a try. To my surprise they aren't very hard to set without the setters. I am not a hulk either. I used my 2 hands (& a foot) and used the ground to help me set it. It's not an old trap with worn springs either. I was shocked myself, as I always assumed the setters were necessary. You have to do it with the trap laying on the ground. The foot and the ground did more than my hands, as far as force go. Hope I get that mole!

I've been setting the OOS with and without setters for about 30 years. As in the above comments, stand on it. Use your hand to push the dog over the break point. AND ALWAYS KEEP YOUR HANDS OUT OF THE JAWS.

Much prefer using the setters. I always seem to trip the trap 3 times while getting everything just right. It's much quicker to make adjustments if you don't have to take it out of the hole to reset the trap.

Does anyone put a pail over your OOS set to keep the sun out? I haven't been, but am curious if some find it helpful.
