Advanced Trap Coyote traps - 12/22/16 07:07 PM

Anybody have experience with the large dog traps for coyotes made by Advanced Trap? They seem sturdy, well built, and very professional. But do urban coyotes go in them? Any other traps worth considering?

Thanks,

If you are talking about cage traps, You will not catch many coyotes in them. Cage traps are a VERY low percentage trap for yotes.

Kirk has had a few people having good luck with them in his newest trap.

Those that r catching yotes in cage traps...I wonder if it's only in places where there's real restrictive laws. Seems like caging a yote would b tough.

Dan Gates in Colorado explained that though he has caught a number of coyotes in cages, in his experience it required 300-400 trap nights for each catch.

Sure can't make any money with those catch ratios! OR..... you will make a ton of money, but the client gets no results. Effectiveness MUST be a part of the equation, and states that only allow caging coyotes just haven't had enough pets and livestock killed yet to remove the restrictive laws.

I was told by an employee of a farm that has some of my traps that they have caught quite a few coyotes. Last summer I was told that they set two traps and caught 3 coyotes in 2 weeks. They own farms in several states, I am not completely sure which state.

Some have said the problem they have catching coyotes are all of the other animals getting caught. I was told one of the farms caught 54 animals the first 50 trap nights using 4 traps in locations on one of the farms. You can't catch a coyote if the door is down. They would ride by after taking an animal out and another would be in the trap.

Live bait seems to really help.

Two trap designs seem to be the most effective and only I recommend.

I wonder what kind of bait people use to cage a yote. I dont think live bait is legal here.

a few years ago at our local fur auction i spoke with a guy that built his own box traps for bobcats. much like a cage trap but made from plywood. what i thought was most interesting was his bait choice. he would trap rats, rabbits, gophers, etc and skin them and stuff them with newspaper and let them dry. then he would put them in the back of the box with a light behind it. anyway, he was talking about some misses that he had and said that he found coyote tracks at the set and believed that he had missed them because his box trap was not big enough, and was going to make some bigger ones for next year. always something new to try and learn about
