Yellow jacket?

Yellow jacket? - 10/31/16 07:18 PM

Got yellow jackets under my siding. Wife is highly allergic.
Been hitting then with wasp and hornet spray. Filled the entry point many times with the foaming spray. The spray has killed just a few most seem unaffected. What can I get locally that will kill these darn things?

Were they fresh can's? I've never seen or heard of YJ's that are immune to killer spray's.

Me either. That stuff usually cracks them pretty good. Don't know how old the can is. Getting some raid wasp and hornet spray and try again.

Automotive brake cleaner puts them down good.
But WILL stain/discolor siding or painted surfaces.

And is EXTREMELY flammable, and may well deteriorate the wood.

Dusts like delta, drione or sevin can be pushed deeper into the cavity than aerosols or foams.

A “Duster” like those shown in this link (http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/dusters-c-29_192.html?page=all) filled with five or ten percent SEVIN DUST is very effective at killing yellow jackets in a wall.

A small plastic bottle with a spout like the one in the below picture can be used as a duster. You probably have some around your house.

Dusting the entry and interior as best you can as suggested will do the job. Foaming and aerosols will only serve to push the yellow jackets back into the home living space. Or to move them to another point of entry as is the case many times when this is done using a repellent or sealing the entry.

Thanks guys. Ended up killing quite a few with the spray. I'll get some dust and give that a shot. Don't want them please pushed farther into the siding.
There is a crack in the foundation there which makes me wonder if the nest is actually under the house I instead of under the siding.

Rob for longer seasonal protection against the YJs get some of those YJ containers that you hang up around the property. We use them here at school around outside track and garbage can areas like tennis courts...some of those containers are totally filled up with bees.

If your wife is allergic, don't play, hire somebody to take care of it. It's not worth them stinging your wife. Nests are pretty big this time of year. They're also going to become aggressive after the first big frost and the flowers die.

Well you guys were right. Killed a hundred or so outside the entry point. Now they are coming out if the siding about two feet from the first opening as well as the original entry point. Put a wasp sticky trap in front of it. One side is catching quite a few.
The only seven dust I can find is 5%. Will this work? Gave them a shot of it at the second entry point. They are crawling through it to get into the siding.

Don't expect instant results with Sevin dust. I poured a cupful on a YJ nest in the ground. I watched them crawl through it coming and going for a week. It finally killed them though.

You're not long until the snow flies. A good hard freeze should do them in.

Mountain Dew is an excellent attractant for the YJ traps.

Never thought I would be happy to see a hard freeze. Gave them a good dose of seven after dark. The sticky trap I set in front of one entry has a bunch on it and one wasp.

Well after the seven dose last night and this trap I haven't seen any new YJ today. The other side of the trap has about as many on it.

Keep an eye on it as there is more than likely capped larvae that may emerge. If the dust is present in the nest it should kill the emerging larvae but it doesn't hurt to retreat the nest if you see more activity.
Seal it up once you are sure it's truly dead.

Best diy I ever saw was a bug zapper placed and turned on outside their entrance. They'd fly out and hit the thing! It was awesome!

I would get to the nest, kill the queen and get the nest out when the next cold front comes down. Otherwise this spring you will be back at it again.

YG

I use Fipronil mixed up in a small pump up sprayer for the yellow jackets and other around the home pests. Fipronil is not cheap but it does a number on bees and bugs. Set your sprayer for a stream and squirt/soak the YG nest from a distance. Everything in there will be dead in hours. Use the mixture to spray around the foundation of your home also. This is some bad stuff so read the label for mixing instructions and precautions.
