Charging for mileage on a job?

I have a job that is around 40 miles one way from my house how would you charge for the mileage?

Would a Dollar a mile be to much to charge?

I'd figure my time and mileage... if possible check and see how much uber would charge to make the trip.. that would give you some idea..

You can charge whatever you feel you need to. While you have an IRS deduction for mileage, that is just
what the govt. allows as a write off.

If you are worried about pricing yourself out of a job by charging too much thats one thing, but ultimately
charging mileage can be about current gas prices, wear and tear on your vehicle, etc...

Guess I'm just saying, no one can tell you what you need to charge like most things in business, it is up
to you to decide what you need.

When I give a price to a customer the price must reflect the amount of time and gas I think it will take it but I don't break it out for the customer. Have to make it simple for them. As soon as you say I have to charge x because I have a 40 mile one way... you just told that customer to get on the phone and find someone closer. The price you quote may be right in line with what they were expecting to pay. No reason to talk yourself out of a job.

You may not be a full timer with lots of jobs coming in but if I get a job in an area that is typically farther out and I don't necessarily want it but the customer accepts the price I will tell them I am busy and schedule it out a little bit. It gives me a little more time to snag another job in that direction. Can't take credit for this one. Mike Flick taught me this, just passing it on.

Here the provincial cap is .45/km and the fed is .55/km.
We charge .45.

Wow, that's a hike. I'm operating out out of a pretty urban area so I typically don't go outside a 15 mile radius. If I'm a little slower, I'll take a call 20-25 miles out and charge a bit more. For instance I charge $95 set up and inspection, $75 per service or animal locally. If it's further out, $150/ $95. Unless of course it's beaver job then I charge one large flat rate.

My area is a small town of about 20 to 25 thousand people and smaller rural towns outside of my area! I know of only one other guy and he is 50 miles from me and he will travel farther than I will. I will do most jobs within 40 to 50 miles but they are going to pay for my mileage I have to travel!

WOW! Charge what ever your per hour fee is. If you don't have a per hour fee, what the heck is wrong with your business?!

Forget the mile expense, calculate the TIME. We cover 90 mile radius. We get paid for the time it takes.

I would charge the going travel per diem rate for your area plus your hourly rate to the job site and back.

My rate for within 30 minutes is $195 set up and $85 per beaver...if i am between 30 min and 60 min away price goes to $295 set up and $125 per beaver...im ok with it on the distance ones if they say no but will not lose my butt if they say yes

You need to get paid your rate to travel. I can stay home and make no money, why travel to make no money.

I figure time plus mileage. I know that in 40 miles I'll burn about 3 1/2 gallons at regular pump price plus 45 minutes based on my hourly rate, equals the extra I have to add to the bill. And, if it's 40 miles one way, that figure is doubled and added for every day I plan to make that trip.

If you are getting paid by the catch, then the farther you travel the more you have to add to the per catch fee. Example, I don't mind 50 bucks per beaver when trapping close to home. But if I've got to travel half way across the next county, my fee may go up to 75 dollars per. Add another county over and my fee may go up to 85 or even 100 bucks per beaver. My hourly rate for dam removal and such mat stay the same, but if working by the hour, I do charge mileage.

If you DON'T charge for travel, you will loose money. An hour there, an hour's worth of work, and an hour back should be charged for time plus expenses(or gasoline). Not to mention, if you weren't traveling, you could be getting paid for those hours that you would be spending on the road.

What it comes down to is this, It's better to LOOSE the job than to loose money doing it.
