Utility knife
What do you guys carry around with you? Ive received alarmed looks when I've used trowels to open cantaloupes. I suppose all they see is the flash of metal and think machete. I'm thinking 3 or 4" long blade that is thick enough to be used to do all the odd prying, etc that happens day to day.
Great question Eaten! For the last couple of years I always have an 8 ft. tape and a 4 inch Gerber big blade on me. I use them all
the time which means I got smart 50 years too late.

These are a good knife. You can get a leather sheath on ebay.

That's interesting. I was looking at their 4.1 inch.

I don't have a number for that. I'm generally a buy quality person, but don't want to spend stupid money for a knife that will be beat on as a general rule. I want to be able to trust it and have it comfortably fit in my hand.
Yesterday I was looking at a fixed blade utility knife that was my Grandfathers that I was using to cut sheet foam and started thinking, "gee, I wish they still sold these things." It had a nice tapered blade with a flat back, fairly comfortable handle, fit in my minimag sheath, etc.
I figured I'd ask what you guys used.

Leatherman Core, I use it just about everyday, has two 3 inch blades, not a bad tool for 75$. Not sure what the price is now on them.

I carry a Benchmade. It was given to me prior to a deployment or I may not have paid 150 for it. But now that I know how durable it is and sharp it remains, I'd buy one. It a folding version with a pocket clip to keep it handy.
I was watching reviews on Amazon and they were mentioning hardness levels at or just below those of my chisels. This surprised me. I'd expect a working knife to be softer to resist snapping and make touch ups easier/faster.

I am a Leatherman Wave man myself. I have carried and used one for more years then I can remember. I use mine for something daily multiple times I would safely say.
I have used, abused and have had some replaced over the years. There are many choices out there. Comes down to whether you are a Ford, Chevy , Dodge or Toyota guy. Take your pick. They all get the job done.

Amen. My father gave me one when I was 12. I still have it and use it often. I'm afraid to bend/break the tip so refrain from prying with it.

Broke the tip on a Buck 110, ground it back to a point. Then found out they have a life time guarantee. Sent it in and they replaced the blade and make the knife look new. The letter they sent with the returned knife said if you break a Buck knife don't try to repair yourself by grinding. Just sent it to us broken we repair or replace.

That's about the best news I've had since I found out I didn't have an STD in 1997! And that was good news!

Victorinox Swiss army knife.
I didn't know that the buck 110 had a life time guarantee, i snapped the point off mine [probably wrong tool for the wrong job, i seem to remember something about floorboards and something dead], i do have another but the one i broke had the nice finger grips, only problem is i bought it at Bass Pro Vaughn ontario so i don't know how to sort it out.

Several times a year several types of Moras come up for sale on Massdrop and Woot. With Massdrop, search for what you want and click the "request" button. They will email you when it comes on sale and you are under no obligations.
Picked up a MoraKniv Companion MG (C) for $11.40 shipped on Massdrop midsummer and can't put it down. Takes a razor edge, easy to clean, easy to maintain.
If you don't like the plastic sheath Moras come with, can get a heavy duty leather sheath for $5 here.

That's a benchmade torrent, a kabar deskabar, blackhawk paddle with light holder and double stack mag pouch holding a streamlight strion led and gerber mp600 and a bark river golok.
And that's just the cutlery. Can you imagine what David must look like when he's carrying?

^^Got the feeling the answer to that is an artilleryman's wet dream...I thought I carry a lot of hardware!
..speaking of which, I just got a nifty little neck knife. Anybody here use a neck knife?
I'm almost afraid to ask, but what the heck is a neck knife? And can I get away with getting my wife one for Christmas instead of diamonds?

Let's just put it this way. When you absolutely have to put a hole in something make it one they will notice.

Re: Utility knife - 12/01/15 04:55 AM
Wink:
Answer to question 1: It's a sheath knife that hangs vertically from one's neck, like a pendant. Usually has some sort of catch so's it don't fall out of the sheath.
2. Could be. But diamonds are always a safe bet.
Yeah Dave, I think you're right about the diamonds. I'm afraid that neck knife could turn into a butt knife real quick.

I carry an ESEE 5, at a 1/4in thick itll do any "odd prying" that comes up. it runs for about $150 new but its well worth it, comes with a kydex sheath and a lifetime no questions asked warranty.
The little divit in the handles for bowdrill (hopefully you never have to use it for that)
And the coating holds up indefinitely, i abused the heck out of my Junglas (the big chopper ESEE sells) and its held up perfectly.

I'd love to do a side by side comparison of my golok and the junglas.

send it to me and I'll be sure to do it
I love the look of the golok

Re: Utility knife - 12/01/15 10:10 PM
IIRC, the junglas is a flat grind. The golok is a convex grind. In use it's more like a hatchet than a knife but unlike a hatchet it has a wicked draw cut if you can get the wrist snap down. I regularly pop 2 inch bamboo with one swing and it will throw chunks, like a hatchet, on cutting hardwoods.
It has basically replaced a hatchet for beaver work.
You guys got me going with this knife thing. The only problem is, I have a propensity for losing anything of any value. So, today I
solved my knife problem. Menards had a deal on a Guidesman stainless steel, black oxide coated, liner locking, anodized aluminum
handled, Star Fire knife. Now this knife is pretty pricey at $6.99, but this week only you get a $5 rebate, so the final cost is a
buck ninety nine. I got two, just to be on the safe side.
I bought a Mora Companion HD. It was under $20 at Amazon. It's been great! The carbon steel blade sharpens easily and takes a great edge. The jury is still out on the sheath though. It functions fine and I like that it doesn't look like a knife sheath, but I've already put the white plastic bend in it where the belt loop connects to the sheath. I guess it wasn't made for crawl space tear outs. I may have to drill a hole in the bottom of the sheath as it appeared to collect water while in a rain storm last week. I had to remove a bit of surface rust from the blade. The 1/8" thick blade has so far pried without complaint. The handle has been comfortable and I've been able to remove the silicone from it with ease.
