Cobra venting!! - 09/15/15 06:57 PM

I see a lot of people on here seem to use it!
Is it just me or does anybody else think the stuff actually sucks
For ventilation? There are plenty other products I think that are better
curious why everybody seems to use this?? And it is the same
Price or more expensive than alternatives.

I have it on my house for 20 years...and my roof still looks good. Look at the building code for the amount of ventilation per attic space.

Don't let them kid you Kasey; they only use it cause it's got a cool name.

I like it because it doesn't warp and stays flat.

Menards by me sells a similar product called Mongoose. From all the animal shows I watched as a kid Mongoose beats Cobra every time. I can use the same logic here, right?

Re: Cobra venting!! - 09/16/15 06:19 PM

They could have called it a monsnake, a moncobra, a monasp or monadder, but they called it a mongoose. So are young ones called mongoslings?

Clogs with dust faster than other brands

Re: Cobra venting!! - 09/19/15 03:18 PM

Don't care for the mongoose brand due to the glue strips incorporated into the vent material.

Re: Cobra venting!! - 09/20/15 03:40 AM

What don't you like about the glue strips ?

Gums up the shears I use to cut it with.
Minor annoyance I know but is what it is.

There is no truth to this whatsoever. A good friend who is also my neighbor and the largest roofer in this area says this is a bunch of crap. By the way he roofs about 500 houses per year so he has some experience with venting. I'll take his word for it and continue to use it.

Re: Cobra venting!! - 09/22/15 04:22 AM

I also side with Adam, this style does fill with dust faster due to a tighter weave than mongoose or the other roll-a-vent or 4ft sectionals. Still our go to install ridgeventing material. This will be discussed in Vegas in Feb smile

Re: Cobra venting!! - 09/22/15 01:10 PM

No it doesn't Jordan. If the north country style stl has the inner filter intact that is a tighter weave than cobra. If cobra is installed correctly that is... I've seen where some daily it down so hard and tight there isn't much of a gap left

Re: Cobra venting!! - 09/22/15 01:17 PM

Thinking that it should doesn't make it so. I replace ridge vent every day, in fact l be replacing 178 feet of North country today, and I've tried about every brand there is here and I still stick with cobra. I do have a complaint but it isn't dust.

How many roofs have you been on with cupped shingles and seen cobra at the top?

Re: Cobra venting!! - 09/22/15 10:24 PM

I personally think snow country has the best
Venting, it just sucks for bats, but once hardware
Cloth is down I don't need cobra or mongoose.

Re: Cobra venting!! - 09/22/15 11:47 PM

Kasey what is your plan for all the bat crap the falls through the mesh into your customers home? Also when bat urine rusts the mesh away in less then 10 years what do you tell your customer?

Re: Cobra venting!! - 09/23/15 01:44 AM

travelintrapper calm down relax it'll be ok LOL
Posted By: NE Wildlife

Re: Cobra venting!! - 09/23/15 02:11 AM

3 reasons that won't happen, 1st I don't use mesh that will rust, 2 bats don't get in the way I put the screen on and install the
Ridge vent, 3 bat guano doesn't fit through my screen/hardware cloth.
I don't think that cobra venting is inferior product I just think that there are better venting
Options out there

I'm with Kasey. PVC coated wire isn't going to rust.

This is the reason that this site is valuable. Two guys solving the same problem differently and the rest of us weighing the ideas

and benefiting from the discussion.

nothing to be calm about Adam, I am always calm. Ive seen several places where what I described above has happened. Most guys around here put 1/4" hardware cloth on then some even reuse the old north country, with new shingles. WE just did a fairly large job with 76' on the garage and 178' on the house where this was an issue. The garage and home were "bat proofed" by a somewhat reputable company and he contracted a roofer to fix the venting issue. Well 3 years later the owner is sick of bat crap falling on everything in his garage under the peaks and got me out there to see what we could offer.

as far as dust clogging it in my experience I see way more issues with clogged vents on the intake, or the soffits rather then the exhaust- ie ridge.

In rural areas with busy gravel roads and cornfields on all sides I have seen it almost completely plugged. For whatever its worth. I still use it in places.
