Is this the article you are referring to?
RE:
http://www.wsj.com/articles/macabee-an-o...KEYWORDS=albano Another new competitor has popped up: a pest exterminator named Steve Albano, founder of Trapline Products in Redwood City, who used and studied Macabee traps and came up with what he considers a better design. “I think they just work better,” says Mr. Albano.

The wall street journal is an excellent, conservative newspaper that is not just for investing but any business owner.

Great article. Its nice that we get to hear from steve from time to time, but too bad we never get to hear from people at Macabee, havahart, and victor. Even if we dont always see Mac and Havahart as top quality, they are industry leaders.

Actually, when I started in business, Havahart built a pretty good cage. ( I still have a dozen or so ) Then while all of their
competitors were trying to build a better product, they took a turn for the worse. They may have sent them to China to be built
because there was no testing. Their first all metal doors could be twisted be a strong raccoon and the animal would walk right out. I
had a customer who bought one of the first new two door cages. The raccoon blew the cage apart in her basement. Since we no longer
purchase cages that an animal can get his paws out of, Havahart is out of luck with us. We still get a number of them free from
customers and will use them if circumstances allow. They know how to make a good cage; they just refuse to do it. If I told you how
many Havaharts we own and how many we actually bought, you would laugh!

When Pete Askins was still at woodstream they had good products that lasted. Then they went to china like many and the design is still there the metal isn't. Just like the article stated things have to go better with times or the company is overcome by others. same is true with companies just doing one method to achieve the result. sooner or later they fall behind.
