I moved my ladder over to the house the other day and now have a small woodpecker that comes to the aluminum ladder and pecks on it. Anyone know what that's all about?

Generally drumming is related to territoriality and or breeding.

Had one on our metal chimney cap years ago in Portland thought a neighbor was running a jackhammer.

That was a flicker in that case but similar behavior..

Have one that likes to drum on the chimney cap, was sitting next to the wood stove watching TV, and scared the crap out me the first time!

I use to beat on my chest with my fists like Tarzan instead of having a cigarette. smile Maybe a testosterone related issue.

Sounds like you traded lung cancer for broken ribs, Bob. What is it about cigarettes? I haven't had a smoke for thirty five years and

I sure could use one right now.

It's his way of attracting women. We say, "hold my beer and watch this!"

Had one pecking on the metal plate on an electric pole for 2 or 3 days.
