Good Directions....

Good Directions.... - 04/23/15 09:29 PM

Not sure about the rest of you, but though I like the song "good directions," I prefer for folks to just give me their address rather than lay out the turn by turn for me.

I tend to think it is a generational thing for the most part, you used to always have to give directions to your home as google maps, gps in the vehicle and built in nav
weren't available.

I often find myself writing down directions as I just did knowing full well that I'll end up just going to google maps on the way there, but trying to be polite and not push
someone who desires to give you the play by play on getting to their house.

Disclaimer - I will say there are still places that not only don't come up, but worse, come up wrong even in city limits, etc...

Just a funny thing as times change and technology makes some information obsolete....

I have one county a little ways from me that does not have 911 address yet. They have to use the old way. Did not say I liked it, but is the way it is for now.

Jim,

Most of my directions I need are in the mountains or on ranch land, sometimes I'm amazed Google can find it, most of the time I need the old school version.

Justin, you sure know how to pick the subjects. One of my pet peeves from day one has been people who don't know where they live. "We

live in Brookfield." No you don't you freaking moron. You live in Pewaukee! And you've lived there for fourteen years! You just tell

everybody you live in Brookfield because you think it's classier. ( Can you tell it drives me crazy? )

Ask anyone that lives in NW Kentucky, they all say they live in Cincinnati.

I get people who avoid telling me they live in Ladue (one of the wealthiest ZIP codes in America), presumably becuz they think it'll cost them more.
As for finding places, I've been doing some sort of service work in St. Louis for so long, I can find a street (in a dead-tree street guide) and determine a route faster than I can enter the address into GPS.

Dave used to make birch bark maps for Lewis and Clark.

A potential lawn care customer called me and asked for me to come out and give an estimate. She gave me her address, and said "I'm on grass road right next to quake road." I replied "North or south of quake road?" She replied "I don't know."

Yep; another reason not to rely on customer's directions ("I don't know if it's north or south. It's on the left side"). Here's yet another: "turn left at the gas station.."Me: "Turn on what street?"..."I don't know the street name. Just turn left at the gas station." (Me: "ARRRGH!")

The GPS units were really slow in those days!

Dave, my family has lived in the wealthiest zip code in Wisconsin since 1949. They needed a family to bring down the average and we

were just perfect for the job.

Wink,

To your earlier point, if I have another caller give me their subdivision name like I should know it because it is so special......

Honestly some folks believe the hype that the realtor gave them to the point where they assume you'll charge them more if you know which neighborhood they live in...

Good times...

Note to clients, your subdivision is not a city or suburb or village, it doesn't come up on google and is therefore useless to me...

I wish I had a dime for every time I asked someone for their address and they didn't know it or even knew the street name. Now mind you, most of these people are not year-round residents, they come from Pauls part of the state or further south yet and own "vacation" homes. Then I get directions like, "Turn left on either the first or second street past the Harbor Bar it's the big white house on the left side of the road or the right side depending on which way you come from. I'll turn the light on if I remember."

My all time favorite is the time a guy called and left a message (before caller I.D). "Hi, I have a coon in my attic, I live on Pine Street". No name, no phone number, I don't even know what town. My GPS couldn't even read his mind.

We've had a lot of folks from Houston buying weekend property in my area. I get directions like " just across from the barbed wire fence or the drive is across from the the big pine tree". Seriously, this is Texas, there are barbed wire fences everywhere and my area of east Texas is known as the Piney Woods! There are pine trees everywhere. Give me a break people.
