What have you done to be effective?....i am thinking of making something that would be like an enclosed triangle...i have steel bird spikes but dont know if that would be a correct placement for them

Joshua,

Would have to see the lights, have seen some where you could use spike if folks are okay with the look. Most of them I've seen if you put spike in they
are going to build the nest there. I've seen some where doing a custom buildout would be the best way, or modifying the type of light fixture. I bet with a pic
you'd get some good answers, too many light fixtures and settings for me to think I can tell you true without a pic...

Best,

Justin

The Cracker Barrel restaurant in our area had hired someone to stop the sparrows from nesting on top of their outdoor speakers.

They used Nixalite type product spikes to remedy the problem. However, as is the case with sparrows using that type of deterrent is rarely to never effective for these birds. They are slum birds and will settle in just about every or any nook or cranny they deem adequate for a nest site.

All the spikes just served as a structural support foundation for all of their debris, they appreciated the support. smile

Sloping or triangular configuration with no internal access is about all that is effect besides total access exclusion measures.

FWIW: I almost lost my cabin to a fire, started by a bird nest next to the fixture. Was a very close thing.

And Big Bob isn't the only one. Had a very hot nest at customer's place last year. Not something you would ordinarily think about.

man. it worked, but with that cage on the house, i'd just remove the light. it's kinda gaudy just to keep a porch light.

Setting a fake owl on the porch seems to scare the birds away.

I've built triangular slide of aluminum flashing and placed it on top of the fixture. Match the color of the fixture and the flashing material and you should be good.
