A First For Me

A First For Me - 03/19/15 05:56 PM

Got a muskrat job at a condo complex that has a good sized pond. They like to swim through the 3 foot culverts and feed on the

roots and grass. There's 5 or 6 inches of water flowing through these culverts and I had an idea. I took two 18 inch Comstocks, set

them sideways so the cage would be a couple of inches wider and the trigger wires would be running down from the top of the cage

instead of sideways. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the very first Comstock I set for muskrats, had one swimming around in

it today. I will keep this in mind in the future. Success with the Comstockbear!

A funnel tube colony trap might work well depending upon the water depth and flow rate thru the culverts which will allow multiple catches if you are getting good traffic back and forth. Funnel the trap and suspend it at the mouth of the culvert.

I once set a 9 X 9 double door Tomahawk in a 2 -3 foot culvert on a golf course. It was in between the ponds, and a couple hundred yards long. They wanted the Muskrats removed alive, and I had caught quite a few and was pretty happy with myself. Then a flood came.....I never thought to put a heavy weight on it to keep it from washing into the culvert, where it still is today. I can see it, and every year it goes farther towards the other end and a recovery.....live and learn.

Albert, a chimney rod with a hook will get that back for you. Just add as much rod as you need. It's how I remove DOA's from under decks, etc.
I wonder how many skeletons are in it.

We use 8X8X24 size squirrel traps on a floating board.

Albert, that's what grandkids are for. I take the smallest one, hook him up to a saltwater casting rig, and send him in after the

cage. When he's got the cage, you just reel him in. I tried using granddaughters but you have to play them too much; they fight like

the dickens and there's always a chance that they'll throw the hook.

LOL, thanks for the tips on getting the cage back. I never thought of sending a kid in after it Paul, might actually work...you'd never catch me going in after it, that's why it's still there, someday eventually it will end up in the pond at the other end and I'll fish it out. These are ponds that the homeowners association has us remove the Frogs from every summer , seems there's so many they keep the locals awake at night....I have to tell you, they were right....

Wow Albert! I had some really good frog legs at the Chinese buffet the night before last, but those look even better.

Good story, Wink. Be sure to give the g-kids a candy bar after you drag their filthy, scratched, half-drowned bodies out of the culvert!
Yummm! Fat frog's legs....

Dave, I am an expert grampa. The grade school grandkids get a buck for each A on their report card. ( The high school grandkids get

five bucks for each A ) Either I have the smartest grandkids in the world or the best report card forgers; not sure which.

Re: A First For Me - 03/20/15 02:20 PM

Thanks Kasey, I had no idea that we couldn't use colony traps in culverts. Of course that really wouldn't stop me. If I don't know,

neither would anyone else, including the woods cops. Joshua, I predict that she won't be your last mink in a koi pond. Maybe not even

the last one in that koi pond. Vinke, I'll see if I can get that recipe for rat legs. Then you should be able to open our own

restaurant. I've even thought of a name: "Vinke's Attic."
