Sure looks like it but Paul said there are no mole in Wis. If there is a hole in the middle and the dirt is in clumps. It could be crabs. But not likely. I have not seen them in years and the water level has to be hi.

Mole mounds are cylindrical in shape vs. the crescent/horseshoe shape of a gopher mound. In sandy loam soils, mole mounds are chunky while gopher mounds are fluffy.

If allowed, probe between the mounds and see if you can find mole tunnels. Or, when you guys thaw out, look for surface/foraging tunnels (raised ridges) in and around these mounds. If so, you've got moles!

All of the mounds I've seen so far have been In really
Dark wet soil! Maybe it is crawdads

If it as a crab there will be a hole that the crab crawls out of with the dirt. If you sneak up you can see them some times.

Do they still use blue ointment for crabs?

No Paul, alcohol and a Ice Pick! Shave one side and pour on the alcohol when the crab run to the other side stab them with a ice pick. Works every time. LOL

There must be a couple of different kinds. I've seen the flesh colored and nearly transparent ones and also much darker colored ones.

My guess would be starnose moles. They are found in NE Wisconsin. They usually live in dark wet soil. They don't always make mounds, so people often don't realize they're around. Steve Albano's traps work great on them.

The mounds in your photo look too broad for crawdads. Their mounds are usually tall and narrow. New crawdad mounds look like they're made of neatly rolled balls of dirt.

It is moles I think , I looked at them up close and kicked the cow pie off the
Top and there is a hole going down on a angle around the size of a
Golf ball. I have caught star nosed moles In bottom edge sets for mink

Always remember you can set close to a mound in a good tunnel...the tunnel itself is usually within 3-6" of the mound off center......use a probe to determine where the tunnel is and once found...probe 2 inches to right and left so u know you have the direction the tunnel is going before you dig
