I'll bet you named that blond one Marilyn Monmole. What's the story on the fawns? ( At least that's what I assume they are )

Paul, his location says Cumbria England. I'd say Roe or Fallow. Not sure which one they have, if not both.

Re: Like these?? - 03/12/15 10:19 PM

They are called Chital or better known as Axis Deer.

Re: Like these?? - 03/12/15 10:33 PM

No, they're not chital, nor axis. They are fallow . Dama dama.

nice moles.

Thanks Brian and Roe. Some really good pictures of fallow deer on-line. The bucks have very palmated antlers. Are they

semi-domesticated?

I stand corrected. Never saw the palmate antlers.

HI Paul, they are some herds that are semi-domesticated, but most are wild. They are sometimes selectively bred fro pelage. The romans brought them over I believe.

Thanks roe. Every time I look in the mirror, I can't help but wish that I had been selectively bred for pelage. Mine is getting to be

more non-existant every day.

These were taken out as pests on a caravan park, all fallow does, the smallest one is what we call a follower {last years calf], the adult does weigh in around about 65lbs with head and feet off, i took another 2 a few days after this, the site wanted us to cull half the herd which was around 20, but it is not as easy as they think it is, 20 sets of eyes, 20 sets of ears makes it a lot harder than some would think, then there is the problem when you get one lined up for a safe shot, another walks into the scope so you cant shoot.

I ended up with 5 and they want me back next year when the site is closed again.

Brian,

Can you tell us more about your rifle setup, what an FAC is and what it takes to get one? Also can you talk about public attitude and expectations for using silencers in the UK. I'm going to guess you took the does with a .243 but I'm interested to know if you used a different caliber.

Re: Like these?? - 03/14/15 01:19 PM

Eric,

The set up i use for Deer is a Remington 700 in 243 with a Bushnell scope, 243 is the smallest caliber we can use on Roe, Red, Fallow and Sika, we are allowed to use a 22 center fire on Muntjack and Chinese water deer, but there are none where i live.
Firearms certificates are issued by the police and last for 5 years, they state what rifle and ammunition you are allowed to own, for the first five years you are restricted to the land you can use it on [ usually checked by police], after five years you can apply for a open ticket and can use them on land that you think is safe to do so, as long as you have permission from the land owner in writing.
Most rifles now over here have sound moderators on them, it is difficult for the police to deny one as this country has gone mad on health and safety, these also have to be recorded on the FAC.
the FAC will tell you how much ammo you are allowed to buy and how much you are allowed to hold.
I am sure i have probably missed out on a few points but i am sure .Roe could join in and help out.

Thanks Brian,

I think this is a great topic for WCT Magazine to show differences between different countries with what is allowed for handling wildlife conflicts.

Absolutely Eric; and I imagine what's on both of our minds is large bore airguns. I would think that a well placed head shot should

be fatal on any of these smaller dear with a .25 caliber. A well placed .22 mag is on whitetails.

Re: Like these?? - 03/14/15 09:20 PM

Paul,

It's differences like that I'd like to see get published. My understanding is you can use an air rifle in the UK provided it doesn't exceed 12 fpe at the muzzle. Once you exceed that rating, you have to have a FAC which is why some air rifles will be marketed as FAC air guns. This is also why you'll hear Europeans talk more about bullet/target placement and proper calibers than you'll hear in the States.

Also, unlike our hunter education in the States, qualification for an FAC requires both classroom and hands-on testing. There is a YouTube video where they go out onto a FAC range where the applicant must judge distances, fire X number of shots at X number of targets getting a certain score as well as explaining why the did or did not take the shot.

As a hunter/trapping education instructor in Ohio I hear people complaining about having to spend a day or a day and a half to get their hunting/trapping license and it gets worse if a fee of $5 is charged to help cover expenses. Once you get out of the states you find out how good we actually have it here. Take Canada for instance, a trapping license requires 40 hours of instruction and the people who want one have to pay for it out of their own pockets. My guess is this is something similar with the FAC in the UK.

Re: Like these?? - 03/14/15 10:42 PM

Eric,

There is no testing at all for a FAC, only background check, for character and criminal record.
I think the test you have seen are probably the deer society level 2 tests allthough these are not mandatory but a lot of large landowners will not let you on with out it, i dont really agree with it because most of the deer i shoot are shot because people want rid of them and i DONT do it for free.
